and he did call the dvla who said it was not taxed and hadn't been since nov 07

I'd agree with Boggert. Sounds like you have a 'bent' disc. You've done the right thing by contacting DVLA. I'd let them have all the details of who you bought the car from, and a copy of any adverts the person has put out. They can then sort the problem.

i had this b4 when previous keeper had paided for his tax by a cheque an the cheque bounced i didnt know this soon did when i got stopped sayin i had no tax on car took me a while to sort it all out an in the end dvla sent all the bills to previous owner
