Hi I bought my landy in Nov 08 with mot till jan and taxed till the end of the year, the main issue is when my wife went to tax it yesturday newyears eve the post office said that there is a break from when it was last taxed so she said no there is not as the tax runs out to night and been new years day in the morning you wont be open to re tax it she was advised to ring dvla which i done to find out that the numbers on top of the old tax disc was not on there system and i will be liable for back duty till the last tax in nov 07 but they have asked me to send them a photo copy of the old tax disc'c which i am doing in the morning but my main thing is as i was on the under standing that the tax on the truck was valid till the end of the year and now found out it wasnt who is liable me or the last owner and if it is me what can i do about it as it was not me who put the last tax on many thanks henry

If the tax disc states on it that it ends 31/12/08 then its the previous owner.
You werent liable for the tax when it was last due as you were not the registered keeper.

Sounds to me that the tax disc was not valid when it was sold to you, one can check on the DVLA I do on any car I plan to purchase and have found the odd one not legal.
You might be liable for Tax and any fine from when you re registed it

Agreed, but you may well find you're liable of any outstanding tax since you became the registered keeper.
So in your case that'll be two months worth.
I fell into a similar trap when I bought a Disco about a year ago and was told it was on a SORN as it needed work before I could MOT it. Once MOT'ed I went to get the tax and got the same thing you did, it wasn't on a SORN. I had to pay the outstanding tax on it but I was only liable for the amount since I became the registered keeper.

As the owner of the car you will be lible for the back dated tax from the date you got it. But what is wrong with the tax that was on it?
