If your old intercooler hoses had perished, and delaminated inside. This could cause damage to the fins.

Sounds stupid but water can damage turbine blades like stones can.  Depending on your air filter set up,  if water could get through it could easily cause bent blades, especially when its spinning at 20,000 rpm.

I work for cummins turbo technologies and some turbo's spin up to 100,000 RPM. crazy eh.

That's why they can't have roller bearings :-.

Sounds daft but have you checked inter cooler pipes for splits??
