Ever tried JD single barrel or JD silver select single barrel - very very very nice  8)

adding ice is for two reasons, first reason is it weakens the taste slightly if you don't like the sharpness of most whisky's

and more importantly, there's actually a chemical compound in malt whiskey that reacts with water and actually increases the taste of the malt. the adding of ice will not seriously effect the ABR percentage.
