I too live in a housing association flat - not really by choice but necessity. I didn't take offense as the people in the flat below me are known for drugs so can appreciate what woody is saying.

Hope you get it sorted or are able to move somewhere that stays 'nice'. That applies to all the above who have found themselves in an area that is going downhill  :D

:cry:  Know what u mean Woody, you will know the town I live in and it used to be very quiet and somewhere Sunday drivers used to flock to, nights are terrible, kids about 13-16 year olds hangin around, suppin cans and bottles, taking god knows what and hurling obscenities at whoever walks past, to be fair the uproar caused in the local rag has made the police calm it down a lot but they are now habiting our local parks where our dogs walk and kids play....Its all just a sign of the times I think!!!

It's not the rental element, it's the usual minority that gets everyone else branded the same.  Where my dad used to live, the family that BOUGHT the house had a wild party, to which all the neighbours were invited - but I don't think many went - and ended up with the teenage daughters running about in the middle of the road, drunk, either topless or stark naked!

It's really not nice having horrible neighbours - I had problems myself when I first moved in, again with home owners.  Everyone else on our road is great and the level of street crime is absolutely minimal.

Another sympathiser here.

I bought a brand new house on a nice estate and everything was great, however house prices went up and the neighbours moved and rented our their houses. Both houses ended up being lived in by people who were, basically, scum. Screaming kids and parents. Chav parties with drugs (and screaming kids at the same time) Loud music, litter, leering and threats. A neighbour caught their friends jumping up and down on my MGB at 2 in the morning and they also fag burned our new decking the first night it was down. Numerous scratches on the cars including a hit and run (luckily I saw them and got some money back by threatening police action) etc etc. I may sound a little 'snobby' but I paid good money to live away from that kind of behaviour. It's unfortunate for the vast majority of renters/tenants that they should get labelled in such a negative way (I used to rent and consider myself a decent guy) but it does feel as though rentals open the door to these sorts of issues. Maybe it's because they can get out so easily as opposed to the expense of moving or maybe it's to do with pride in ownership? Who knows?

Anyway, Woody - I agree entirely. Move and get out. I did. And when the scum move in again keep moving. Me? I'll keep working and saving and I'll get off this godforsaken island as soon as you can!

Being an Ex Housing officer for a housing association and I have worked in the private rental market as a Maintenance Surveyor, before joining the plod I think I know what woody is trying to say.

Its not that anyone who rents is bad, because thats just not true, I met some lovely people in HA property, some have become friends after i left. Some private rentals, expecially cheap property attracts people who have been evicted from council or HA property. The problem is once an area is on the way down with out knocking it down, its real hard to to get it back up.

I remember renting a house for a client, the tennant was a nightmare paid the rent but caused loads of problems in the street, kids out of control, noise, damage you name it.
Anyway we evicted her eventually and the client sold the house back to the council she purchased it off.
They then re housed the woman we evicted from it!  :shock: Bloody council had no feelings for the rest of the street. I spoke to the Housing Officer who said "well we deal with that if it happens again"  :shock:  :shock:
