4x4 and phones
landraver:
But are you seriously saying that because someone drives a vehicle which has drive to all four wheels instead of just the two, they are more likely to use a mobile phone whilst driving?
gords:
Statistics can be used to prove anything ...
I find that you only "see" the outstanding things - before I had, or was interested in, a Discovery I hardly ever saw any 4x4s. As soon as I wanted one and since I've had one, I see them all the time!
How many times have you seen a driver singing along to the radio? Are they paying full attention to the road? Should radios, cd players, etc be banned?
I have a Discovery and my wife has a Sharan (people carrier). Both have fully fitted hands free phone kits. Am I "much more likely" to talk on the phone and have/cause an accident in one car more than the other? If so, which one and why?
This is just more of the usual bandwagon bullshit IMHO
Elmo:
Bad driving is simply that - whether affected by mobile phones, hairbrushes or whatever. There are no excuses.
As a counterpoint, here in rural Shropshire I would estimate 75% of people spend the majority of their time in a 4x4 of some description and I bet our accident figures are better than most. So are "most" 4x4 drivers inattentive? I would humbly suggest not.
V8MoneyPit:
--- Quote from: "arightpest" --- Did anybody else hear on the radio today a news item saying because people with 4x4 believe there motors are safer to drive we are more likely to use a mobile phone while driving
--- End quote ---
So what about Volvo's, Saab's and others that are misguidedly perceived as 'safe'? Another case of targetting 4x4's because it is easy to isolate them from the masses, me thinks.
Karen696:
The worst culprits for using mobiles on the road (in Black Country / Birmingham area) are the 'white van man' types. Their driving is bl***y dangerous at the best of times - there should be a device fitted to vehicles to block the signal. Even with a hands free it means your attention is 'elsewhere'.
I ride a bike, I drive a 'car' and I drive a 4x4, I DON'T use the phone whilst in control of a vehicle. As easy as that.
Its an offence to use one, but how many people do you see using them? LOADS, why do you see people using them? because the police don't enforce the law.
Speed cameras can only catch speeders, what is needed is more traffic cops - willing to enforce the 'little' laws.
