Dr Neil:
if the starter spins it is either the clutch in the startermotor itself or possible the teeth on the ring gear worn, it might be worth taking off the starter and inspecting the teeth on the ring gear to check for damage, by all means send me some pics and i'll try my best to help.
hobbit:
Or if the machine has been in mud it may need cleaning out

can some one tell me how many wires should be conected to the solenoid? there is a yellow wire coming from the loom by it im sure it should be conected to it some were so a pix or a diagram wud be great
thanx simon

common for them just to clog up with dirt, just undo the 3 bolts and take out and clean. u can play around with it out of motor more easily, just remember to clamp starter down or have good grip when you attach power  (jumper leads and battery will do)
