1972 classic v8,lpg or 200tdi conversion?how economical?
DAVE V8:
hi,just bought a 72 classic ,believe it to be ex police, any websites i can try to check it out? (grommets on roof loads of red/blue swicthes on dash and odd front grill with pair of spots,it needs a bit of work to get back into use ,trouble is the v8 engine runs very well,(the heart says keep v8,but bank manager and wallet says different, lol.) i have a 200tdi disco and am considering fitting the engine and box...at first i thought i was going to fit 200tdi in it,but the old thing deserves to keep its real engine ,so can anyone tell me rough fuel figures for v8 ,4 speed carb engine/200tdi engine ,5 speed/and figures for lpg on v8 carb..any tips appreciated..cheers dave
Range Rover Blues:
300 TDi, manual, slightly tweaked, around 27MPG carefully.
300 TDi auto, 30mpg (21 mpg towing)
3.9 V8 EFi on single point LPG, 10-12mpg on LPG
5.0 V8 EFi on multi-point 9-12.5 mpg on LPG. Fit a sport exhaust, decnet plugs etc, it makes a difference. The V8 responds to tuning/servicing well, the first sign of cam wear is excessive fuel consumption, so worth fitting a new cam chain at the very least (A fellow member got around 18MPG out of his 3.9 after replacing the cam and chain).
Depends how you drive it and the condition of the engine, but I reckone there's little difference between a V8 on gas and a TDi, other than finding a gas pump.
BTW, 200/300 TDi are similar on fuel

just got rid of my 2,5 disco auto 22/23 to gallon looking to get 4,0 petrol more fun and petrol is now 8pence a litre cheaper than diesel around here so it depends on how much mileage you are going to do my next one will be for fun only so it doesnt matter tooooo much well thats what ive convinced myself
DAVE V8:
top man,ive decided its lasted this long as a v8 it deserves to carry on as intended and theres just something about the v8 rumble,im going to run it v8 and possibly try and get lpg later?,but like you ive convinced myself petrols cheaper than diesel and i wont be doing too many miles.lol...
tack43:
3.9 EFi auto with open loop lpg 14 mpg pottering about and 18 on a run albeit I tend to have a light foot. I'm paying 65.9p a litre for LPG so works out a lot cheaper than a diesel auto.
