would a 2.5td from a 90 fit into a series 2 or 2a?

frosty:

well ive been and looked (and bought)..ones a series3 with a perkins diesel engine and the others supposidly a late series 2 although the head lights arent in the middle there on the outside..is this normal? its on the old f plate which i think makes it tax exempt (ill look into that)..

whats the perkins like compared to the 2.5td?

  cheers, james

Landy1uk:
Regarding lights I think they were put into the wings in 1968 - 69

If i'm wrong sombody will say i have a Series 2a 1970 the lights in the wings And that on a H plate
Think Tax excempt is up to 1 jan 1973

regards
Rob

Disco Matt:
Yep, if it was registered before 1st Jan 1973 it's tax exempt - in other words anything with an "K" on the end of the plate or earlier will be, some "L" will also be although only if registered between August and December of that year.

IIRC the Perkins was a popular swap, I'd probably find it horribly sluggish after a good TDI but it must have had its merits.

bogie:
The perkins is a good old realible lump for chugging around but if you want go somewhere go for the 200,with 3.5 diffs and a overdrive im getting 45mpg on veg oil,55p a litre which works out at 100mpg price equivalent and have been GPSed at 115mph.

I do like the sound of that! However im not sure which direction to go in..Ive got them both home and had a much better look..the series 2 chassis is shot to pieces but it is tax exempt has an over drive and free wheeling hubs. The series 3 has a pretty solid chassis, the diesel lump and the truck cab which I prefer and a nice ifor williams rear cover..

The mrs has fallen in love with series 2 and has suggested I rebuild both! bless her! Im thinking strip both down rebuild the series 2 using the solid chassis a td lump, over drive and the free wheeling hubs.. The series 3 using a galvanised chassis ive just been told about, either parabolics or coils, a tdi lump and rangie axles. Anything left over ill try and flog as i go along to fund the builds..its either that or one of my kidneys!

Anyone know what p38 axles are like? there must be loads of them around going cheap!
