have i blown a diff ???
stretchy:
also if you fined a SAFE way to stop the spining front wheel the drive should be diverted to the other side thus ruleing out a fubard diff or half shafts

i am gonna check again when go into work but i seem to think ther is way to much play in the front prop tbh ! from what i felt and listend to i cant really hear much from the CV joints when was spinning the wheels . the noise it made immediately made me think a CV has gone as i had 1 go on a Clio i once had and i made the same noise just allot louder.
a little other question is their a certain type of grease to use if i want to grease the Cv's ? and do i need to oil the uj's on the props also ??
Range Rover Blues:
If it's a D1 then the CV are running in oil, or one shot grease. I use a Lucas hub oil because it's better than one-shot.
Propshafts should be "normal" grease or a decent water proof grease for automotive applications. I use another Lucas oils product sometimes.
wheels244:
My money is on a wheel bearing.
I had a similar experince whilst towing my bike to trackday at Donnington.
Metalic grinding noise, went away for 10 miles came back with a vengence on the M1 - I had to be recovered.
Did you feel the wheel to see it was warm ?
When I stripped it down, the bearing ( what was left of it ) was dry as a bone and inner race welded to stub axle - I got it off though

had to take the missus back to her house just now only 5 miles round trip . car didn't make a noise until right near my house got a rumble when slowing to i took it for about another mile and kept slowing down gradually to a stop and it was happening . i got out the car felt my side wheel hub cover it was cold felt the passanger side and it was warm , not boiling or even hot but was deffo warmer than my side
i am swaying to thinking it could be a bearing ??? i am also gona change the front prop shaft As thers loads play init can rotate it back and forth about a 1/4
