have i blown a diff ???
chris_harvey:
hello all ! i was on my way to warrington to meet a few of the lads as we wear going to bala to do some greenlanes and i herd a noise from underneath like a metal clunk noise, the car was running fine tho :do: so i tho rt ill go easy see if anythink els happens ther was nothing. we met got on our way and as i was going on and off the car started making a noise very much like a CV joint had gone like metal rubbing or knocking so we pulled over and had a look nothing was obvious so i decided to scrap the trip and get bk home b4 any major damage was done , they all went to bala.
Ive had it up on a ramp with all 4 wheels of the deck , the CV joint/ big balls things seem to be OK no knocking when i rotated the wheels . the front prop had alot of play in it i could move it very easily with my hands and the back one was solid . i started the car let the clutch out in first to find that only 1 of the front wheels was gettin drive to it ( only 1 was turning )
anyone have any idea what mite be at fault ????
thanks in advance .
ChrisW70:
Does it drive on the road without diff lock?
If the front prop has play in it that usually points to a UJ gone?
With all wheels off the ground you will only get drive to one wheel - if you put in diff lock you will get drive to one front and one rear - power takes the line of least resistance.
chris_harvey:
yes it drives on the road with out difflock i had it in high box and drove home normaly ?
Disco Matt:
Is there play in the front prop with all four wheels on the ground? If so, that suggests prop UJs - you can usually see movement in them if you hold the yoke that bolts to the diff or gearbox and try wiggling the prop with your other hand.
When mine started going the symptoms included a rhythmic vibration when accelerating hard at around 60mph - if I booted it up a hill, for example.

if all els seams fine I would look at wheel bearing or hand break pads rubing on the drum.
I have had a very dried out fubard wheel bearing that sounded like rubing clanging metle together and also had some lose pads rub on the drum that made a jingling sound that took me ages to fined. you normaly get a tiny tiny bit of play in flanges from t box and diff flange but if there is play in the ujs get is swaped asap as will only get worse even more so If you offroad as its under a greater angle when the suspension is working
