Lumbering Jack:
Last one i did I used a piece of flat bar and two G clamps - took the tension up and a tap on the piece of bar and it popped off.  No amount of pulling by hand was gonna shift it as the whole column was moving.

V8MoneyPit:
I have a cheap motorcycle sprocket puller that I put the relevant bolts through. Looks much like the rather more expensive LR 'special tool'.
