it just went bang
« on: December 06, 2008, 23:43:03 »
just as i thought id found a auto box to fit onto the bmw turbo d that i have fitted in my disco it blows
it didnt get hot on the gauge but it blew all its water out
now as soon as u put water in it it throws it out , if u put the cap on it pressures very fast and blows white smoke out the exhaust

at best head gasket , but being a bmw motor i think the head will have cracked

now as the motor isnt a uk motor i dont think i will find a head cheep so.......

what to do

i want it to be auto

think im gona have to bin the bmw motor and fit somthing else

thinking ,
3.9 v8 , will prob be the cheep option as i can get hold of a rrc for very little cash

been looking at
gmc 6.2 v8 deisel , not sure what auto box to use
land cruiser 4.2 turbo d and auto box

any other thoughts ?

needs to be somthing with some grunt tho ,  my truck is big and heavy with 37" boggers

the motor is a m21 , its a very early version of the motor in the p38 , omega , and bm cars

its a cam belt not chain and has no electrics very basic and thats why i put it in

the motor was fitted to US spec e28 bmws , i think from 1981 - 1987

it was a convertion over here in the rrc,

id like the v8 thump, and it would have the right auto box for it
if i do keep the bmw motor i have id still have to sort a auto box for it

if i go down the v8 route am i gona be asking for problems , electrics , not being reliable ect

megasquirt the v8, and you can sit under water for aslong as you dare  ;)
or go back to a landy tdi lump, parts for them are everwhere, and very cheap
you can get a load of power from them aswel, more than enough for 37 boggers

I've got a 5.7 GMC V8 Diesel sat in the garage that I keep meaning to put on ebay but never get round to.
I bought it to put in the hybrid I was building but never did.
Had 2 new head gaskets fitted before I bought it.
For sale if you want it.

id done a bit to the 300 and it was still very slow

also fancy somthing a bit different , the sound off the bm 6cyl was great

It's got the fitting kit to mate it to a 4 speed Range Rover manual box, I've got the gearbox as well.
Not the auto you are after, I'm sure adaptor plates will be available for different boxes.

It's a non turbo - I'll try and find the stats - torque will not be a problem  :D

Have to say I've not heard that. My experience has been that they are as reliable as hammers and pull like trains...................and make me use lots of cliches :)

Hi I worked for iveco for 15 years, they are very good engines when there running well, avoid the laters EDC engines, go for an engine from a 59-12, 120 bhp, they rev really well, they do a 4x4 version with a cam chain instead of a belt, these are a bit hard to come by thou, 35-12w was the 4x4 daily version, oh and pump timing is a bitch to do, a DTI gauge is needed, part from that there very good indeed,

he had a 6.5 turbo gmc , it had to much grunt and snapped halfshafts all the time

as for the 6.2 non turbo that they didnt have enough grunt !
he said that it aint worth the aggro of fitting it , plus they are heavy motors

i didnt ask about the 5.7 tho , i read that they only have 100bhp didnt see the torque figure and thats less than a 200 tdi !

realy stuck with what to do with my truck , may get fed up a break it yet !

i drove a td5 90 yesterday and realy liked it so may scrap the disco and find a 90 instead !!!!

with the gmc engine mate, dont do it,thats my advice, you do what you want, but why not tune a 200tdi and put in,turn the fueling up a bit, good air filter and exhaust, and something like a ali sport intercooler,i know it sounds expensive mate, the some of the other ways you are thinking of could end up beeing worse, with the tuning on a 200 or a 300,you will get something like 125 130 and 220lbt of torque, and if you blow that, you only have one night on e bay to find another one :-k

One of the lads I used to work with had a 6.2 GMC V8 in his Rangie....It was awesome. It only really broke stuff when you drove it with a heavy right foot.....like all engines really. He put a fast idle control on it so he could just engage that and let it get on with its business!

there does seem to be mixed feelings on the gmc , same with alot of engines i suppose

realy cant decided what to do with my truck now

thing with putting a 200/ 300 tdi back in it is id have the cost of the motor and then all the bits to get more power , why not put somthing with more power to start with ?

what about a VM engine that was put in the rrc? they had low down torque and I think they sound nice. a mate swears by them and will only buy rrc's with a vm engine in.

Lotsof good things about the VM engine but it's hard to get parts for it now.  Bit noisey and it was reckoned that the 200 TDi in the Disco was better than the VM in the RRC, but like you say some people love them.
