Hello All :D

A very good friend of mine once fitted a Fiat uno turbo engine into an X19 and if anybody knows the car it’s a mid engined car like an mr2 the length of the exhorts was no longer than 3 feet   it came out of the turbo and popped out just under the rear bumper with no silencers fitted at all.
The first time we started it up we expected it to wake the dead   but some clever dick we know told us that because noise is caused by a engine firing pulses the more the cylinders the smother the power pulses the quieter the engine equals a v8 with very short pipes sounds brilliant,  the pulses produced by a turbo engine vehicle are forced into the turbines this compresses the pulses smoothing them out so once it leaves the turbo and enters the exhort it is far quieter than an old escort with a broken exhorts

I've run my Cav without an exhaust, it's b***y noisy!

That's a good point about the turbo though, it does absorb a lot of energy from the engine, and noise is energy.
Difference between diesel and petrol is that diesel really doesn't like back-pressure, more so with a turbo, hence the TDi has an exhaust at least as big as a V8, even though the V8 is bigger capacity.
