Why Did He Wait Until Now Before Saying Something????

Bush Tucker Man:
I guess we all know that he didn't want to 'rock the boat' whilst 'in office'

Talks almost as much sense as Ray Mallon & Keith Helliwell though!!!

Disco Matt:
In my honest opinion we do need Human Rights laws. Look at what the current government get up to in terms of surveillance and infringing the liberty of innocent people, and consider how much worse it could be if we didn't have some sort of legal framework to protect us from their excesses.

That said, they need to be tightened to stop every little  :-# and weasel lawyer from using them. I know the UN Human Rights stuff does include provision for just punishment of offenders, and the rest of Europe doesn't seem to have any trouble with the same EU Human Rights laws that we're bound by.

hobbit:
Note the key word here is Solicitors

Lord Shagg-Pyle:
The Human Rights Act was thought up after the Nuremburg War Trials to try and stop the genocide from happening again. That worked.
It wasn't adopted in the UK at that time as it was felt that we already had sufficent laws in place to deal with that.
Along came New Labour, who decided that we really did need it after all. Tony is married to the delightful Cherie, who is a barrister, who specialises in Human Rights law. Funny that.
As someone who has to contend with the HRA every day of my working life, I have to agree with what this Det Super is saying.
However, time and time again, I hear at work "We can't do that because it will go against the Human Rights of the suspect"
What about the Human rights of the victim, or the Rights of the community where some little scrote is causing havoc?
That gets forgotten about.
What about the Human Rights of the Servicemen and women who get pulled up on a murder charge, because they have shot someone in a warzone who was trying to kill them?
The Law is there to protect the Majority, not to crawl and grovel to the law breaking minority, who see living outside of the Law as their way of life.

Bush Tucker Man:
L S-P

You're bang on!!
As usual

I still reckon he didn't want to 'rock the boat' though, despite his personal views (which he undoubtedly shares with practically every Bobby in the country)
