Not quite the same but allmost.
I used to have just my Elise (only car) and did a lot of trackdays, huge risk to breaking it and once spent 2 weeks wihtout car dut to a part on order (and it was only a rover part).
Becuase I needed it I often had to spend more on parts and garrage services than a DIY job with mates helping an eventually I could afford a runabout as well. There were practical issues that compounded it e.g. no boot space, but that are similar to your mud on seats, mother in law cant get in type issues.
Having 2 cars can help (even re the money)
Your every day car can be more economical for petrol
If you bust your "toy" you dont have to rush to buy parts and can wait, ebay etc and get mates to help with repairs
You can modify your "toy" more, my Elise is now very very track focussed but wouldnt want to commute in it! (no stereo etc)
You can get a limited miles policy on the toy (Again My elise and Landy cost £390 full comp for both, but only as I have a propper car as well)
You can SORN the toy for a few months, especially if its off the road being modified, however I appreciate 4x4 is an all year round hobby
You could get a tax exempt Toy
Security "may" be less of an issue as you dont have to leave it round town center car parks etc
Less tyre ware on expensive off road tyres (maybe, thats a guess, but use borign normal ones on the runnabout)
If you get half way through a job and needs parts/tools/food you can still nip to the shops!
