First Start
muddyjames:
I have the same problem with my 300tdi auto too. It only turns over slowly but just when I give up all hope and think it isnt going to turn over agian (about the 5th time) I floor the louder pedal and it starts up.
My battery is 1 yr old now, glow plugs 2 years lift pump 3 and alternator throwing out 13.80volts. I had to jump start it off my other car the other day and by gum I have never heard it turn over so fast. It was amazing.
Could it just be a 300tdi problem somewhere?
smith335:
forgot to say that my lift pump was new a few months ago,
so thats new glow plugs, new lift pump, new battery, alternator putting out 13.80 volts.
i took the battery off today to charge from the mains, it was only on 5 mins and the charger showed it was charged so the alternator must be charging it ok.
like muddyjames says it must be a 300 tdi thing....
thanks for the help and advice
Merry christmas to every one.

Two things spring to mind after playing with my 300 early this year
Insulate the battery all round and from below, polystyrene as good as anything
The starter may need a service, the gearing in the thing may have old grease in it from new, and may need re doing, mine had gone like putty

The lift pump theory sounds interesting too as I've been supicious of mine since chaging the fuel filter. It would prime by hand as per the manuel and trying to bleed it with the motor running just led to the engin staling as it dragged more air in than it pushed out?

I'm assuming you meant to type "wouldn't" there (apologies if I'm wrong). Mine had exactly the same problem, it seems that the fuel lift pump diaphragm can be fine under normal running but split when you try to use the manual priming lever. It took ages to start and was down on power. Replacing the pump fixed that straight away, and it's now back to scaring Golfs on dual carriageways...
Mine does seem to take a few more turns to start first thing at the moment, but I've put that down to the fact that it's only just over freezing out there.
