Rev Counter fluctuating

(1/3) > >>

mickelson:
Before I take a look, can anyone tell me if they have had a problem with thier rev counter fluctuating on their 300tdi, and if so, what caused it? I know it gets its signal from the alternator so that will be my first place to look. It has started to jump around all over the place and has gradually got worse. I'ld like to think i have one of the wires loose at the alternator but i know thro experience things are never that simple.

Mine does the same after a long drive

check the "W" connection on the back of the alternator, nearly always the problem is down to a loose connection on the wire or the crimp connector being loose on the terminal on the back of the alternator
if all your connections are ok then it may be the alternator thats at fault

nat_hale:
Hi all,

Mine did that, common problem. It is usually just the wire off the back of the alternator... its a tiny pathetic little wire, and just needs pushing back on! Mine used to last about a day then play up again... in the end my mechanic (who picks the disco up to take it to service/fix) got fed up with it irritating him (would think he drove it more than me... doesn't really go in that often!!) he popped a new female connector on the wire and jobs a good-'un... no trouble since!!

Cheers,
Nat

Gents, thanks for that, You have confirmed my suspicions. Will let you know the outcome as soon as i get chance to look at it. I only fitted the Alternator about 6 months ago so chances are either the coinnection or internal fault. i dont recall it happening before or straight after renewing. As my wife drives it every day her 'fault reporting' skills arent the best!!!!!!!!
