Any idea on cost.....

Les Henson:
Are you absolutely sure it's the pump? A dry TRE/drop arm joint or steering damper will groan as it moves. Raise the front wheels off the ground, remove the PAS belt and then turn the steering lock-to-lock and see if it still does it.

I wish I was that confident.  It should be mint but given the problems you arre having I wouldn't put money on it.

You've had the pipes replaced.  If oil goes through them and doesn't leak then they work, end of.

But the pump and box, you replaced them together and now the pump has failed.  Was the pump new?  is it under guarantee?

Given the expense I'd say fit a good S/H pump.  Ignore any slight leaks just to see if it lasts any length of time.  If it doesn't then it's the box.

OR, fit a S/H box for now, again a known good one, and see how it goes.

Because of how the steering box works it wouold be possible for a very slight mistake in the machining of the valve to be causing the fluid to overheat.  Does the power assistance seem about right, or too little/too much? more to one side than the other?

Disco-Ron:
If i have the front wheels off the deck, i can turn the wheels from lock to lock by twisting each wheel quite easily, so nothing tight in the system....

The pump is being replaced by the supplier, i'll have it in acouple of days, and then i'll try again......

This will then be the fourth pump, and fourth box..... the in-between boxes were all recon..... which i gave up with.... one blew the bottom seal clean out, circlip n all..... then the next one the input shaft seal went....

i'll see if the new pump works ok...... i might even remove the damper, i have solid steering bars, and people reckon you don;t need a damper sometimes .... is that right????  the more i can reomve, the less there is to go wrong....  ever seen a disco without power steering..LOL!!!

Thanks for the ides guys.... any help is good help!!

trecfive:
Have you checked that the swivel pin preloads are not too tight, big tyres a little soft, all add up to more resistance.

Disco-Ron:
everything is nice and free... and i'm only using 235's at the moment.... with 35psi in them....
