I don't know about taxes but at 45p per ltr The price of their fuel must be crippling em.

You need to actually live in these places befor you can make statements about them. North America depends very, very much on where you are.
Canada for example you are hit twice on perchases, GST (Goods & Sales Tax) and PST (Provincial Sales Tax). Now pretty much everywhere this comes to about the same as VAT but two or thre provinces dont have PST. Albrta doesnt making the tax on most items 7%. Then theres the $250 tax rebate a few years ago because the province made more than expected that year.
I think the biggest single issue here is down to the way we are treated.

can you imagine HMG saying "gee guys we made too much money last year ..heres some of it back". they are more likely to set up a quango to monitor the amount of calcium in breast milk.
