i had to laugh

What mucks it up for us is the under 25s who are having all the bad accidents.
Women are the ones who reverse into you, run into the back of you on a roundabout, that kind of stuff.
Whereas if a lad has an accident, it'll be rubber side up in a field somewhere, possibly with the air ambulance in attandance.

I had to take a deep breath before replying to this......
I don't think insurance companies are in the business of giving money away - so if insurance is cheaper for women it means that they have less accidents than men.
Without wishing to generalise - which you all seem to be doing - men are cocky drivers with NO patience. They drive too close and are invariably on their mobile phones.
I have had only one accident and it was caused by a man going over the lights on red - his insurance company paid me a lot of money - but it didnt compensate for the fact that I lost my nerve and no longer drive. (one less woman I hear you say)
I think there are good and bad in each group - but basically men like to show off and don't like to admit weakness.

i see just as many men as women doing stupid things, there really is no difference between them.
its the inexperienced drivers who are the problem, they should be limited to very small engines for a few years, like they are with bikes.

Oh proper rant thread :)
As a Driving Instructor, I get to see a huge amount of good and bad driving, some of it from learners some from those who should know better. Sometimes it is a woman other times it is a man.
The test is very hard, but often the problem is compounded by parents/peer pressure saying stuff like 'now you passed your test, you can learn to drive properly' also I remember detroying my mums car 3 weeks after passing my test because I was stupid. I learned from that experience but many others don't. We do have Pass Plus which adds more lessons and has been shown in studies to reduce the accident responsibility rate from 67% to 48% in young drivers. Is it mandatory? Of course not. Do we insist on 5/10 year checkups of safe driving? Does the HSE require under PUWER that you have adequate training for work equipment including vehicles and regular updates - Yes. Do we do it- No.
We all think we are great drivers (Direct Line survey back in late 90's had 89% saying they were better than average) and it is always the others who are at fault, in the case above backing into a winch etc then it wasn't us. Just playing Devils Advocate here, could a quick beep of horn helped the situation to warn her you were there?
I had a collison once in the LR when my Mrs was preggy. Nova, 2 lads caps on sideways, boombox going. Long striaght town road, I was doing 30 they kept zooming up behind me then slowing to zoom again. I signalled a bit earlier than normal, slowed gently with plenty of brake lights. They still drove into me. His first words were 'didn't see you mate' LR/Mrs/kiddie to be fine, nova screwed. So sometimes we can do all we can and still not avoid it.
I did read in one mag that the police records showed that LR's were the safest vehicle to be in simply because they had less accidents than any other vehicle (I'll try to find it) probably because we are higher up and more aware of the world around us, also they aren't generally lusted after by teenagers like Saxo/106 etc. I don't think that limiting cars to very small engines is going to make a difference as it already happens. Insurance for anything over a 1.1 is over a thousand for most kids.

Yeap. I read that too. It's funny because the anti's reckon our 4x4 are just acciddents waiting to happen. My answer to that is my 5.0 RRC LSE costs less to insure than my Nissan Micra 1.4 DCi. Yes it's my driving school car, but then it's got all my no-claims on it too.

Sorry, but that is exactly what you have done. Statistically I said, that means someone has looked at the numbers.
As for insurance companies, well just for a laugh I tried getting quotes for a few cars based on mine and my sister's details. Whilst it is slightly cheaper on some cars for my sister, the women-only companies are by for the most expensive, don't believe everything you see on adverts.
Another reason your run-of-the-mill insurance is going up is the increase in specialist policies. Underwriter's have realised there are groups out there who are super-low risk and reward them accordingly.
What this means though is that those premiums are no longer able to support the run-of-the-mill policy, which I say is fair enough. My classic Fords are all on one classic policy, agreed value, no mileage limit. Last year it was £105, this year it went up quite a lot to £170 but then I had added a 5th car to the policy and it's worth more than the rest put together. Again this is with no no-claims discount.
