It's not the petrol companies we have to thank for the prices. It's the government, who charge such high taxes on fuel. This idea is a bit like holding the postman hostage because you don't like the price of stamps. Totally pointless and whoever's put it together has not thought it through in the slightest.

Considering that there are really only a handful of fuel suppliers anyhow then they're not exactly going to be upset if we avoid buying from one of their resellers in favour of buying err... from another of their resellers...
That's like saying punish Microsoft by buying your copy of windows from PC-World rather than Comet [1], I hardly think they care..
Anyhow, this matter has been discussed to death, the only real alternative is we start petitioning for itemised billing on our taxes... It'd be fun to see just how much of our 50p per litre road tax goes on anything to do with the roads or environment[2].
[1] note, I was going to say currys, but that's owned by DSG as is PC World, I wasn't sure whether that would detract from the point I was trying to make or reinforce it... either way I got confused and had to have a little sit down.
[2] Then again, we'd discover that suddenly an extra 30p went on the stuff and that'd be down for producing the itemised bill, I wonder if the words "repressing freedom and thinking up good ways of spying on you" would enter into it anywhere [3]
