very valid point ..............and considering i want to change to a tubular bumper eventually i should look into this more!!

If it's your car you can use the angry grinder, just that you can't remove them at the side of the road.

Personally my winch is removable, now I'm after a new front bumper to make it stronger.

An old tip was to use a short length of strong tubing (with a suitable washer brazed/welded in the end to form a cap with a hole in it

Then a hole was drilled in the side. After fitting, a pop-rivet was applied.
Okay, it will not stop the serious thief, but the opportunist won't be able to get a socket on it.
