When can an untaxed vehicle be used on a public road?
An untaxed vehicle cannot be used or kept on a public road.
There is one exception:
You can drive an untaxed vehicle on a public road to and from a pre-arranged:
MOT testing station
VIC testing station
an approved vehicle weight testing station which covers design weight certificate or plated revenue weight
reduced pollution test
provided that adequate insurance cover for your use of that vehicle is in place

Just had a thought whilst reading this thread:
Most of the time, the small print on the insurance states that the vehicle must have a valid MOT, or the insurance will be invalid.
Anyone familiar with the small print know if there is an exception for cover whilst going for your (pre-booked) MOT?

I cannot be sure about this but once did check with an insurance company bloke on the end of a phone.
he told me that with his company must only be driven to and from, if you had a accident because the vechicle might be deemed to be unsafe on the way, there company would only pay out 3rd party.
I asked what if it passed, he said the same as no valid tax unless you went by other means to get the tax from the PO
These were in the days before online appilcations rules might of changed but have since been told that if you have insurance and tax but no MOT then the tax & insurance becomes invalid if you are caught, unless its just to get an MOT
Now assume then you cannot keep a vechicle on the road once the MOT expires since your insurance & tax is invalid, but if kept on private property the insurance will cover non RTA events.
It seem they are all related no doubt this anti car government will remove this guideline and make it harder to get a MOT meaning loads of work for recovery trucks.

I'd stress caution.
I asked my insurance company to transfer my insurance over to Snorkley (the Disco) because I wanted to take him in for an MOT.
They refused saying that they would not insure a vehicle to go for an MOT and that it had to be trailered.
Needless to say that they won't be my insurance company when the present cover runs out next week.
What a load of tosh.
