Petrol in diesel
winchman:
Friends got a 07 Toyota Auirs diesel
He has put 13 lires of petrol in the tank then filled it to the top with Diesel
45 Litres in total ( petrol & Diesel)
It ran ok but last night would not start, sensor for water in the diesel lit up, gave it a shove down the road, sensor went out started fine.
Will it be ok or should he drain it?
dazzawhipple:
I would drain it because Petrol thiner than diesel and it could over heat the piston melt the end...have seen it done

Working in a Toyota main dealer, Id say he's stuffed.
It will almost certainly have killed the injectors, maybe the injector pump.
They are replaced in the dealership with refurbed units, and so ARE inspected for incorrect fuel etc........
Tisnt good news

I'd run it a bit say to work and back (assuming it's a short hop!) then fill with diesel and so on until you've done around ten fills.
Unless he/she drains the lot then by syphoning out fuel they will never know which bit they have syphoned out.
It's not unusual to mix a small amount of petrol with diesel and used to be done alot in days gone by in the winter to stop diesel waxing in cold temperatures. Diesel has come on a long way since those days.

My mum quarter filled her TD5 defender up with petrol, she filled the rest up with diesel and kept topping it up as soon as it went down a bit, it just drank it no probs! Lol!
To be on the safe side tho, i would say drain as much as poss and fill it to the brim with diesel! It'll drink any leftovers!
