Might be worth contacting Gaydon. It's not the date of registration that they go by, it's the build date. Land Rover had a habit of building the vehicles long before they were registered. If you get the build date you might find it is WITHIN the desginated date range...

Oh and yeah id definately go with getting your chassis sorted(half replace maybe) or finding a second hand galvanised one! good luck!

You can just ring up the arhcive and quote your model and chassis number, I'd try the genral phone number, they will just tell you the date it entered despatch for free if thats all you want; you might even get the despatch destination out of them too as thats about all the records actully say. You'll need to pay for it to be written down in a way DVLA will recognise but if it comes to that their fees are very resionable if it'd save you £180pa.
Don't think you'll be in luck with a tax exempt s3 lightweight though as someone once told me it was 73 before they started building them.
