who remembers the X pack?

Yes but these where before cats and other emissions reducing gadgets were put on the motor - 160 bhp then gave 0-60times of 7.something secs and 140mph+, these days you 200bhp + to get anywhere near.
so your 2.5 turbo diesel has that peformance does it ?
Wanderer:
Must lighter body as well.
Although I used to have a bag of potatoes and a sack of coal in the boot to get anything like grip in winter.

160BHP then was the same as 160BHP now. The biggest difference will be in weight and gearing, electric windows, central locking, and sound proofing all add a lot of weight so a similarly sized car will need more power to get similar performance. Also the crapi was rear wheel drive so traction for a 0-60 will be better than most modern front wheel drive cars. A 5 speed 2.8i does 0-60 in 8.3 seconds http://web.cz3.nus.edu.sg/~shing/capri/perf.html.
These were better than the Ford :P

I think figures for the standard car are 143BHP, 130+mph max, 38mpg and about 10secs 0-60, mine has a chip plugged into it so is probably a bit quicker (BTW it is 10 years old so hardly expensive).

Matthew
glad u see what I mean
I note the 4 speed was quicker at 7.9secs, and the tickford turbo 205 bhp and 6.7secs
think early sierra cosworth 6.5 sec to 60 and 200and a bit bhp in standard trim and 150mph. wonder what modern motor would be needed to match that performance these days ? ... and the same for the early fornt wheel drive escort RS turbos?
I must confess to liking the Manta - a chap down our road had a colour coded white one from new C reg I recall. Always remember the back seemed to lift up when accelerating! , but then, it wasnt a capri, or other fast ford!
BTW you spelt Capri wrongly - twice.
