£400 road tax

Oh and get this .. it works in two ways, it also can be used to "pay as you go" ... the more fuel you buy, the further you can drive on UK roads. Odd but true

Sadly I think the main reason they will perpetually shy away from increasing fuel duty is that it's already perceived as being disproportionate anyhow, hence the "fuel protests", and whilst this government might have gone to the precaution of making it illegal to repeat them I think that even they would balk at the idea of sending tanks over the top of people blocking a refinery ,,

And, so they raise road tax, and why not?  we can hardly picket the post offices, since, frankly, finding one that's still open is a fairly substantial challenge

The problem is we have people who don't pay road tax now so they certainly won't if the prices get hiked up.They have road accidents and have no insurance/tax/mot so insurnace prices go up to cover that as well. I still say put it on fuel prices then if you use the fuel you pay the price and eveyone has to pay tax.

davidlandy:
putting it on the fuel has to be best way forward as has been said the more that you use the more you pay.

Now why could the government not see this logic we wonder?

could it be that he needs a 'guaranteed' revenue hike without putting the price up to other motorists at the same time?

I just hope that they dont put the tax up on my 4x4 - mine is not one the chelsea tractor brigade and shouldnt be tarred with the same brush.

zebidee:
But if you put it on fuel tax then people who live in rural areas are penalised.

Let's see ...

Put it on fuel tax: rural areas are punished because they drive more so use more fuel.

Put it on road tax: everyone with a higher band is punished despite whether they have converted to a greener fuel (LPG).

Put it on emissions: people who have converted to greener fuel are rewarded but you're not pandering to the anti-4x4 brigade who don't see a Mondeo 2.0 as worse than a Disco running LPG.

Basically it comes down to looking for votes rather than actually trying to come up with a sensible transport policy for the whole country.

To be blunt, vehicle types and green fuels is irrelevant. All vehicles have an environmental cost. A v8 on LPG still produces oodles of CO2 and emissions (your still incineratin' a gallon of dead dinosaurs every 18 miles) - but that isn't the point.

My car might not be the most CO2 friendly in the world, but I put out less emissions in a year than some folk pour out a month simply because I'm a little cautious about how often I use my car. My 10,000 miles a year is significantly less poluting than some rep clocking up 30 - 50k miles a year. Where is my incentive?

The people up the top need to remember the first question of engineering - what problem are we trying to solve? Understand the question and the solution virtually writes itself. But in this case, the solution requires a bit of investment from them.

I feel better now!
