just thought i would jump on the end of this post as i have a similar problem  .

from reading bits and pieces i have an idea of what the cause could be, but could somebody give me an idea of how to check the various components???

front/rear diffs, props, etc etc.

many thanks

UJ's are easy... climb underneath and grip the prop shaft near the joint and try to rotate it and move it up and down/left and right. If there is movement with respect to the opposite yolk...or... as happened to me last week... rust and needle rollers fall out...   you have a problem. You can change them yourself... but you need a big vice... a bit of patience and a second pair of hands to take the weight of the prop. They're only a tenner a piece so buy one more than you need just in case... if you get it right first time... it's a spare for next time!

You'll have to ask someone else about the diff's though but I suspect your looking for a similar problem... movement off line of centre of the input shaft and excessive rotational play... don't know how much is excessive though!

Good luck.

I had this on mine I found it was the outputshaft bearing on the transfer box the flanged moved 10mm up and down

Replaced the bearing and all was fine

Range Rover Blues:
Add up all the fre play in the gearbox, transfer box, propshafts ujs, diff, halfshaft splines, cv joints and drive member splines, each one will be only slightly worn but it adds up.
