Jeep did originally have something to do with general purpose vehicle or something like that rather than a brand, the americans had to shorten it because it was too complicated.
Now it is a brand like Landrover, just not as good off road.

It's nationalistic sloppyness in my opinion.
People complain that we're "turning into America", and then pronounce Lieutenant as"Lootenant" and not "Leftenant", and then confuse Land Rovers with Jeeps. Why not confuse Steak & Kidney Pie with a burger, or an Aston Martin with a Corvette?
Being half French as well, a bit of national identity is quite important in my opinion (some people think 2cvs are Beetles!)
