Erm I work for Toyota, and I can promise you the prius doesnt have a five year battery life.
The warranty on the prius was extended from 3, to 5 years(unlike the rest of the toyota range), but the Battery on board has a life span which so far is proving to be indefinite.
It has no preset life span, and in the event of a failure, or a written off car etc, the battery is returned to Toyota Gb where its recycled.
It is a damn good idea, its not a small car, its a fully equipped large car capable of carrying five adults and luggage etc

All he's doing is moving the emissions to somewhere else.

Exactly my point.

Fair enough......but.....
We all know that recycling can use more energy than manufacturing from scratch.
I would take issue over the 'large car' definition. It's shorter (just!) than a Focus. Hardly a large car.
It does seem that in the real world, people are not getting the claimed mpg figures. This, of course, is true of any car manufacturer. I'm not having a go at Toyota or the Prius specifically, just the blinkered view of this particular person.
The best is yet to come. The hybrid car will get better. Without people buying the Prius and similar, it wouldn't develop. As battery technology improves, so will the hybrid concept.
