Transfer 'box trouble
Tyke:
Depends on the problem . . . . you can get limited access from the console tunnel inside the motor. Strip out the tunnel console and remove all the foam and sound deadening material.
Eventually you will find a rectangular cover plate, which may or may not be removable, depending on whether anyone has been in there before. Drill out the spot welds or rivets and hey presto, you have access to the top of the box.
The link rods run over the top of the back of the gearbox to a lever on top of the long rectangular housing on the top of the t/box where the selector and rod are fitted. Access from underneath the vehicle is both blind and very tight for hands. The high/low selector does sometimes slip on the rod and all that holds the selector in place is a small grub screw.
Can be done though . . . good luck . . . . unless anyone has an easier way they want to share . . . .

Thanks Tyke
I will take a look. I can get a rebuilt t box for £350, then £120 to fit it. This sound reasonable if all else fails?

Sounds cheaper than some I've heard of. I'd have a check to see if it's something easily fixed first. We've done three so far this winter with the slipped selector fork . . . . all the guys were convinced the transmission was shot.
You wouldn't be the first to drop half the transmission only to find it could be sorted very quick and easy with a screwdriver, a couple of spanners and an hours effort
Good s/hand t/boxes run about £100+ round our way . . . . a recon would probably be more reliable if you can trust the source.
BTM . . . . don't a few pictures make life easier :)

Not 'arf... feel I can tackle my own now...! (Not staying in diff lock and no... it aint the light switch as it bangs now and then if transmission is undere load when diff lock decides to go in/out!)
Keeping an eye on this thread!

Yes, it's a very good site, even though it's American in origin
