vitaras alternator
Damon:
I'm not an electrical wiz but I must admit I was surprised regarding the 85amp draw on 'no load' too :)
It might have something to do with the 4.8 hp motor on the winch. Who knows? :)
I have to admit that with 2 batteries (one normal Vitara battery plus an extra 'heavy duty' battery) the winch performed "OK", but when I fitted the Optima the winch performance was massively improved :) :) :)
More info on the 1.6cfi alternator would be good, please :) Which vehicle, year etc
Cheers :)
Evilgoat:
Well given I nuked mine its out of the Rabbit at the moment :) I'll se about pics, part numbers etc. Came out of a K reg SWB and spotted an identical unit in an L reg LWB CFi on Sat too.
Check the brushes and bearing before you fit it though :) The 70A Ate its bearings after just 3 months and the brushes on the original 40A: What brushes?
markyb:
you can get a 55amp vit alternator comes on the single point injection models i believe as you say the 45amper are not great but do the job.
the 55amp have external fan and the brushes are 2 screws to remove and clean. great alternators dont mind the wet stuff
i reckon that warn spec is about right , if i recall the 5.6bhp can pull 100 under load.
how have you got your batteries connected? just thought the little one might be trying to become the big one or vice versu

My alternator is 50amp with the external fan, the batteries are connected in parallel, the negative on the Optima is 'switched' to earth so it's out of the system until I need it :)
Mutz:
Have you thought about fitting a Pajero alternator as they are designed to charge 2 batteries and are rated ( I believe ) at around the 85amp mark.
But they arent cheap. HTH.
