Can I put one shot grease in the steering box?

<< < (3/4) > >>

Spacemud:
Well I've thrown caution to the wind and chucked a sachet in (strangeley enough one sachet filled it almost exactly) I went on the theory that:

Something is better than nothing
The gears are probably very worn anyway
It isn't going to get overly hot and will move at the same time as the swivels
It's a Land Rover

I don't really have any way of knowing if it is better/the same/worse though with such an old vehicle, do I?

So, nearly 4 months later, any ill effects?

Spacemud:
Funnily enough I have only just finished the repairs and he's only been on the road since last Wednesday. Looking good so far and the steering in general is very good too.

Remind me again in four months time and i'll let you know!

I was told by the person who reconditioned the stering box in my dads 86'' that greaseing steering boxes is very dangerous as the nut can cause suction at the end of its travel making it hard to get the landy off full lock.  He recomended EP140 so it didn't leek so fast (as once recomended by rover aparently.  also can go in the relay))  I should point out this advice was for the 'worm and nut' type box as fitted to early series 1's.  They have a tube mounted through the steering box so the thicker oil helped them leek less.

Don't know what would happen on the later recurculateing ball type, can they get the sucksion proplem too?  I use normal EP90 (actully 80w90 to be exact) in my 88 and top it up every 3000mines,  its always still pritty full at that stage anyway so doesn't need anything to thicken it up.  I always top up that often ignored steering relay at the same time too!
