What went wrong this week..

Hairyduck:
spooky, I fitted a new radiator on Saturday and then dicovered that my headgasket has gone too, though looking at the head I think that's well and truly knackered too

Any know a good (ie cheap) source of cylinder heads?

Eh???

No fuel valve on the turbo.

Do you mean that diesel is being fed up to the actuator on the turbo - along the pipe that goes from the injector pump (FIP) to the turbo??

If so, I bet you that the diaphragm has gone in the injector pump.  Harder to change than a later 200 or 300Tdi - is just a bit awkward, nothing complicated. They cost about £20/£25 from a diesel specialist.

The diaphragm controls the fuelling on and off boost - when boost pressure is created, obviously more air is being put into the engine - thus more fuel is needed.

When boost pressure is sense, the diaphragm gets pushed in supplying more fuel.
On Td's these have a habit of splitting - and back fill the pipe from the injector pump to the actuator. Meaning that the turbo gets filled with diesel – and allows the engine to run uncontrollably!

Really not that hard to do yourself on a Td... and a gasket set isn't that much.

In fact, I've got a Td headgasket and exhaust manifold gasket going spare (no longer own a Td) yours for a few beer tokens.

Ja1983:
porny - yep, the diaphram problem sounds about right!

my main problem is time, working 5 days, additional work on an evening, plus house duties (keeping SWMBO sweet  )

i have limited tools, no torque wrench, and only a rough drive to do any work on.

if anyone is volunteering their services locally then i could sort something out as the bloke who currently has it is ver busy!

cheers

I'll be happy to give you a hand doing it if you need one. I've got some tools to bring and would welcome the experience in case I have to do it at some point!    Give me a shout on 07883 086251 if you decide to do it. It'll have to be at your place as I've got enough oil all over my drive/garden/street/village as it is   Travel past from Gateshead every weeknight and am usually free on weekends.

Simon.
