I'll sadly be missing Pickering (biggest in north of England), but hope to get to Driffield

They're right sadly. York is a drivers nightmare, unless you know certain streets with unrestricted parking & still just outside the city walls

There's the National Railway Museum at York (on Leeman Road) It's got 'Mallard', 'Rocket' (well, a replica), a Shinkansen (Bullet train)
LNER 4472 (The Flying Scotsman) is in the workshops undergoing a strip-down.
And it's free entry!!!

There's also the York Eye in the NRM grounds (about £6.00/adult), but it's the highest structure in York; bar the Minster.
Mentioning which, that's a beautiful building & a tribute to countless generations of stone-masons if nothing else.

There's 2 aircraft museums within easy distance of Scarborough & York

Leeds & Harrogate are wonderful places.
Leeds is a cathedral city & has a concentration of wonderful Victorian buildings

Ilkley is a spa town (like Harrogate) & has the unsurpassable Ilkley Moor as a backdrop

Railways again
North Yorkshire Moors Railway; 18miles through the moors betwen Pickering &  Grosmont

If you're in Scarborough on the Tuesday,Wednesday & Thursday & can check the arrival times at the station, you'll see the Scarborough Spa Express arrive from York at about 13:30??

Whitby has Sentinel Steam Coach services up the Khyber Pass, but it will at Pickering Steam Rally by the 'Old Glory' stand (click on icon in my signature)

Hope that helps, ask me & I'll tell you more

Check out my 'www' for ideas & images of various places

Thanks for the replies so far..................
Few mentions for Langdale - drove past this last year on that forestry commission road that has a toll - except I didn't pay cos it was late and no one to take money
Don't fancy taking the disco round cos I only bought it a month ago and knowing my boys we would quickly fall into "bet you can't get up there" mode
Hiring a puddle jumper sounds like a bit of fun though
Sounds like a mixed reception for York - maybe just go to tomcats mums for some cake instead

How far is the Humber bridge Mark ?
BTM - I'll be leaving home about 4.30 am on the saturday to get to Pickering - means I can spend 2 full days there - will do the opposite for Driffield - spend the day there and then travel back at night - gives me an extra days holiday and the roads are always quieter - will keep my eyes peeled for the 110 or the hat at Driffield !
HEE hee - while I've been typing this I have just received an email from Land Rover UK Forums - it's now after midnight and officially my b'day - nice of them to remember to send me b'day greetings cos I forgot all about it !
Anyway thanks for suggestions and kind words so far and keep them coming
