The A322 running North from here has a lane closed occasionally.  I like to go up to the point at which the cones are pulling you over and pull in just before.  Other people seem to prefer to get in the left lane up to about 3 miles beforehand.

Er, why do they put the cones where they do, and not 3 miles further south?  To avoid causing congestion further back!  But a lot of drivers think they know better.  It's so annoying when the roundabouts are all clogged up because of these know-it-alls.

Some people get really irate when you go past them in the empty lane.  Lorries in particular straddle the lanes to stop you getting past.  I'd have thought they'd have known better.  In the Disco or the Rangie I could just pull onto the grass and get past them.

It makes my blood boil...

If everyone moved into one lane long before the cones then traffic keeps flowing, its the three lanes into one at the bottle neck that causes the stop/start queues whereas if everyone moved over before the cones whilst at 50/40/30 then that would remain the spped through the roadworks.
One more than one occasion I have seen the police holding back traffic and yes I'm one of the hgv drivers blocking the road, makes traffic flow faster(unless you are one I'm holding back).

Sorry that's completely rubbish and it doesn't work like that. If the traffic is that light to allow that, it is that light to allow people to merge in the last few hundred yards.

I know plenty of roads like the A3 heading into London, M4 same, M25 in a number of places, M11 at Bishops stortford etc etc where they lose one lane. Because it's not roadworks, everyone is fine with merging. You always get the odd idiot trying to cut in at the last minute, but you are not going to rid that.

But as soon as it's for roadworks there is this mass panic to move over as soon as possible, even stopping in the outside lane with their indicator on half a mile ahead of the merge. This is just stupid.

If you are one of thoses drivers sitting across both lanes you are breaking the law by causing a deliberate obstruction on a public road and also hindering people from driving lawfully. Who's in the right?? Not you :roll:

Like you say, it start because most licence holders cannot drive past a traffic cone without slowing down and rubbernecking, otherwise things would move a lot smoother, if not faster.  

I think it's right that a lot of people move over too early, but worse than that they then hate to see anybody get past them.  It's a balancing act, if you can keep going in the RH lane then do so, as long as you can merge without running out of road or forcing another driver to slow/swerve to avoid you.

My biggest hate though is poeple who think by putting on their indicator it gives them priority over someone in the lane next to them, if someone is too incompetant to adjust their speed and get in front of me then they can b***y well slow down and go behind.  As graphicalyy demonstrated by the black Golf GiT owner who tried to change from the lane to my right to the lane to my left, even though I was in it, in Blue, with the trailer :shock:
Well I knew I'd hit him, not because I fealt it, I didn't.  Not because I heard it, I didn't.  It was when he dissapeared behind the spotlamps and started going sideways :oops:
Then he tried telling me it was my fault.   T!t.

Artic lorries straddle both lanes on the approach to a roundabout for a reason - if they wan't to turn right, then they need to swing to the left to get their trailer out from the kerbs and they can't do that if some plank is pushing through in their car. It's the same when they need to turn left - they have to hold to the right as long as possible to get the trailer out and hope that the same plank doesn't squeeze through on the inside.
