Will it fit?
Canada Al:
I run a standard SIII gear box and rear axle ( with 3.9:1 diffs ) in my FC . Powered by a 190 bhp engine . Its a straight six so is very smooth , so far I have had no gearbox trouble ( shouldn't of said that should I ) .Also 900 X16's make it easy to break half shafts but I haven't broken one since the new engine . I guess what I'm saying is it depends on you driving style as to " will the gearbox stay in one piece " . Land rover did all the research to match the best box to engine comb . Most of the time they got it rightish , so is it worth fitting the box that came with that engine type ? Remember , you can not fit a full time FWD box without altering the front axle ( no C.V joints in a series ) . ....Al

a defender lt77 will bolt straight on a 200tdi or the earlier 2.5TD engine.
that should be attached to an LT230 transferbox which has a choice of gear ratios in it.
the combination of the lt77 and lt230 is about 4 inches longer than the series box, so you'll need to move the engine further forward to make room for it. you'll also need to modify all 4 engine/gearbox mounts to suit.
you'll need to get custom propshafts made for at least the front, probably the rear too.
you'll need to adjust the gearbox tunnel in the cab.
the cross members under the gearbox will need modifying to clear the front prop
the lt230 is permanent 4wd so it will rather quickly break the joints in the front axle.
there are some other things, too, but i can think of them off the top of my head

Hi, Sounds as if its best for you to put the Tdi in, be aware that an LT77 will give you permanent 4WD and the front half shafts dont last very long, as they have U/Js rather than a Defenders CV joints,I would use a series box and change if it breaks. Thirty quid gets one from eBay.
Go for it !!

LANDYTIM:
Im on the first engine swap out of the two.
Im putting the 2.5 N/A into the series 3.
Do I need to modify the engine mounts at all?
Cheers
Tim

I put a 200tdi into a series motor 3 years ago for a mate of mine and touch wood hes had no problem with the standard series gear box.
