Best of both worlds as she'll handle being offroad on a mud/grass rally track track. Fuel consumption isnt insane, still a decent familly car and will eat all but possibly the Galant. Insurance isnt high either as they are seem more as collector/enthusiast cars.
Full RS2 if you want go go mad. Insane cars but bloody good family cars too. Again, sensible insurance, if you can find one :)
Or One of the 8 Pre RS2's (If you can find one, we know where 7 are now so theres one out there someplace)

sounds very tempting, but its the finding one, and a good one, plus insurance.. dont think the v6 galant is that feasable really, plus SWMBO will want to be insured on it when she finally passes her test (last one was cancelled  )

My Audi 90 (2.5 Straight 5 Turbo) Is only marginly more expensive to insure than the Vitara :)
As mentioned though, VAGs are bomb proof, 100/80/A4 Avant is a good choice, esp 5 cylinder engines which will go on to over 300K before needing attenton. Anything with VAG FSI or TDI engines are worth a look too. Safe too, My 100 hit a Corsa at 60mph and I didnt get so much as a bruise.
Also worth bearing in mind that if you see a feature set on an Audi you like but cant afford look down the chain. A3 line includes the Golf and Leon. A4 line includes the Jetta and so on.
B4 Bassed Chassis cars kick bottom though :) Specially with 5 Cyl 20V engine.
EvilEd:
Yota corolla, THE most reliable car there is :)
Even the T-Sport give reasonable economy, gr 14 ins and has the same engine as the Celica 190 (with the same output too) hit the "Lift" at 6000 revs and she takes off........
Hovis:
I agree, the VAG 5cyl engine is absolutely brilliant. Both mine had one. I had the one of the old ltd edition GT5's and then I got a 90 Quattro. I paid £80 for the coupe and between me and the girlfriend drove it for nearly 2 years, including to oxford and back everyday for 3 months for work. Nearly 200k on the clock and still went like stink and not a patch of rust. The 90 was pretty much the same but quicker and handled even better.
Fuel consumption would have been ok had it not been compulsory to thrash them everywhere.
I have a lovely little Clio for sale, very manly

mitsi galant - 2.0 sport, VR4 kit, gorgeous, not as insurance friendly, or cost friendly, but a bit nice! v6`s also available, SWMBO will like it, but i`ll have to tell her its a 1.1 and cheap to run!
