If 'ultimate' performance (in real world terms) isn't an issue, why not look at the Skoda Octavia 4x4 estate
Available in the mk 1 derivative only with the 1.8Turbo-petrol (Golf GTi, Passat, TT, Leon, etc... engine)
Mark 2's are available with the (again, VW) 1.9Tdi
Nice motors.
Understated (be a nice 'Q-car; with a set of steel-wheels  )
Relatively quick
Well appointed
Skoda UK website
Octavia 4x4 'mini-site'
The vRS goes like stink, but it's front wheel drive only :(
Forget the sad old jokes, there's nothing funny about not looking at one
Disco_Al:
you can have mine for £1300 (see vehicle profile)

I second the Skoda. My cousin has the 1.8T 4wd Estate and it goes like stink, sticks to the road and yet is quiet and sensible with loads of bootspace, is reliable and fun. Can't fall off really.
The Coupe idea isn't bad but I'd go for an 80 2.8 V6 Quattro Saloon. They're for nothing now and believe me they are rapid. I loved mine. Sold it for £400 a year ago on a K reg. Check eblag for a bargain.
Good luck!
Simon
