Britains Best Engine
Tyke:
Yeah - Whittle has a mention in there as well.
I don't like to get too hung up on the steam engines, beautiful as they are, I like good old mechanical ic engines, diesel or petrol, doesn't matter which. But point taken BTM - without them and chaps like the late Fred Dibbner, many would have pased them by.

Saw the Battle of Britain Lancaster and Spits a RAF Leeming a few years back, just before Andy Noble took Thrust out for the world speed record attempt . . . . the low level fly-by of those Merlins on full bore actually made me cry with emotion.
Bloody Marvelous - never heard anything like it.

It seems every year at the Woodvale Rally (RAF Woodvale) there are at least 2 Merlin Engines present, which are fired up. Last year they had 3.
Very nice engines, especially when they increased the revs to the higher band. The floor vibrated strongly, and you could feel the vibration through the air against your chest from these giant engines. :D

I know what you mean, when I went (A Grand Day Out), the Lancaster was run up to speed & the tail was laterally twitching under the torque & vibration  :D
