Book yourself into a nightschool course and learn there. As for a welder I'd say don't get the cjeapest one you can. When you go up to the higher currents you will have a shorter duty cycle (spend more time waiting for it to cool) and they often can't cope with the 5kg reels of wire, which are much more economical. Something over 200 amps should do, try Machine Mart first as a benchmark for prices, they have a website.
