disco1 headlights stuck on
« on: December 03, 2009, 21:23:16 »

can any of you guys tell me why my disco 200 tdi H reg headlights are stuck on ?? I thorght it may be the stalk switch but have taken it off and they are still on. I have taken out all the relay in the foot wells I can fined and they still stay on. I have been through deep water so im asuming its a drowned relay but I cant fined it. all the loomes in the engine bay look good cant see much under the dash. I can swich them of by taking out the fuse so that poart seems ok its where to look after the fuse box ??? Is there a headlight realy ??

thanks

:-k :-k That makes no sense? The only one I can think of, is there another relay under the bonnet? Or has a wire chafed somewhere that is coincidental? :-k :-k

Hi
I had the same problem with my H reg Disco a few years ago.
I never did get to the bottom of the problem though, but with mine there was something tucked up under the drivers footwell that was buzzing slightly, I assume it was a relay, dispite them not having one on the drawing.
I had a root around under there but the problem was intermittent and it fixed itself within a few days.

Check the "fuseable" links under the bonnet O/S inner wing wiring loom..   they corrode badly...

Has it got the dim/dip relay?

It should have a dim/dip relay.

My advice is start at the lamp hoder and work backwards, along the circuit.   If the stay on with the stalk removed, it sounds like its acquired a postive feed from somewhere. . .

how can i locate the dim/dip relay ??  I can only folow the loom from lights back to the bulk head after that they meet with other looms under the dash and its to far up and tight for me to folow anything.

according to my haynes book of lies there is no dim/dip relay listed on a 200tdi,

but there is a dim/dim unit in wiring diagrams for pre 95 models

so its a according to the diagram its  relay with 5 wires, they are:

a white/brown wire from the oil sensor
a red from main lighting switch
a blue and red from the dip dim switch and also to the bulbs
a blue and white to stalk to the main beam
and a bown wire from the stalk and from the fusebox

hope this helps identify it a bit

No relays on the headlamps on a 200 - direct supply from battery to switch to headlamp (common fault is the switch on the stalk burning out due to the load going through it).
If it  has dim-dip this is usually mounted on the bulkhead in the engine bay on passenger side with a power resistor - looks like a gold block a bit smaller than a lighter. This can be unplugged as there is no legal requirement for this anymore.

Does sound like a dim-dip unit. On a RRC they are mounted behind the dash (metal part of dash welded to bulkhead) support to the right of the steering collum. Just unplug it. They look like a small black box with a gold heat sink on the end. Had the same problem with the RRC.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink it.

On a lighter note, is the battery for sale?  because if the headlights have been on for four days solid, thats a better battery than an Optima
