save up and buy one of the better makes. you will have never ending trouble with the cheaper winches.

I used one on my RRC and it never let me down, they do seem to hold water on the motor caing which is a pain if your doing deep water. the big down side is that you CANNOT use rope on them its wire only due to the brake been in the drum, on lowering yourself the brake heats up and melts the rope

Take alook on Ebay there are a coulpe of Warn 8274 on there which you may get for good money.

25 ft is about the limits for plasma on a drum break, but thats pleant for a play day

NOT USED, BUT have loads of customers with them cheaper winches, and they are all happy with them, some of you boys are megga serious, and not everybody needs the dogs danglies of a winch, i agree with most of your comments, but for someone just having a bit of fun and occasionally winching, these cheaper winches are fine, there not as fast ect ect, but do the job.
if your a winchaholic and winch yourself down cliffs etc then you will only buy the best, a lot depends on it, but not everyone does this.
the only down side i see is lack of spare parts, but i believe these are now available for most of the cheaper options.
plus, not everyone has a grand for a winch!

Totally agree with you which is why I pointed out the excellent Tabor made by Warn for not allot more money!  The limited experience I have had with the cheap winches is exactly that...they are cheap & nasty & often need repairing after 1st dunking.  Personally I buy Warns as they are excellent products & the spares are easily available.  I don't do much off roading but when I do I want my winch to work  :shock: :shock:  :lol:

Yeah its a ploy used everywhere but if anyone bothers to report then ebay usually makes the auction disappear. It is one of there main listing violations.

Spence, how are the Bumpers finished off, are they powder coated? and can I spy a high lift jacking point on the right side. I would also be interested to find out what gauge steel you are using and how far back the 8274 looks like sitting.

WE DONT powder coat anything its lovely for show but no good in the rough stuff, i wont pretend our stuff is stronger, it isnt, but it doesnt bubble ,crack and go horrible when its damaged, you can touch it up as and when, as powder coat has to be blastedoff and redone.
the steel is over the top in all respects when you consider you are bolting it to a chassis madeof 1.5mm or something.
the main plate is 10mm so it will not twist or warp, the rest of the mountings are 6mm and the tubes 3 and 4mm, its more than adequate nomatter what your doing, without being to heavy, the tubular braces make a big difference to its rigidity and strength.
we designed ours to keep the warn 8274 tight to the vehicle, this does mean a fair bit off grill chopping, and on the disco/rrc moving the gearbox oil cooler but etc, but i think its an ace winch bumper for it.
rob will no doubt tell you what he thinks soon!
im not gonna say ne more or i will end up in trouble as usual.

makes a hell of a difference to the 8274 user as its a pitfall of not seeing enough of the drum because of how the bumpers are
looks good tho, interested to see how tight the winch is into the grill, and to how high the bumper its on the chassis for angles

The last 2 points of dans are what I am looking for also, not bothered about seeing the drum too much, but I am interested why Dan is???? Is it just to see how much line is on there? if so when I go on my mates boat we just painted the achour chain every 5 meters as a guide to how much we had let out.

I think Dan like to see it's laying up properly and not all ghoing on one end, that there are no kinks and no debris.  I'm told that one of the most common failure points of winch cable is when the cable ramps up for the second layer as it's kinked quite sharply over the end of the first.  I don't know how tue that is, but I like to keep an eye on my Bowrope too

er why? you will be winching from the cab where you cant see anyway, or from a button on the front (possibly above the grill) where you can see the crum perfect?

one wouldnt be winching from a distance??
