Ignition barrel connections - Series III 1982 88" Diese
« on: April 01, 2007, 21:03:49 »
After a favour please,

Can any one send a photo or a diagram showing the connections on the back of the ignition barrel, I have a new loom but cant work out which cable goes where.

I have the wiring diagram from the manual but it shows the cable (colour coded) and which connection via a number, but I have no idea which connection is which number?

I have 5 connections on the ignition barrel as far as I can see.

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

if your loom is correctly colour coded, then these are what the colours mean.

Its on a series 2, but im pretty sure it applies also for the S.3. hope it works for ya (I just bought a new S3 loom too... still awaiting mine though...)

If its simular to the earlyer key switches that control the heaterplugs and stuff (without relays) then it could be like this (a multimeter can prove it)

5 conections, 4 different contacts. (numbered in tiny rased print next to the metal contacts)

1 massive blade and 1 small blade on same contact - Battery feed (from selonoid, conect to massive pin, the little one is probubly spare (at least on my motor)))
1 normal size blade (6.3mm?) - aux electrics (running positon)
1 massive blade (8.3mm?) - heaterplugs
1 small blade - starter trigger.

If testing the switch with a multimeter it should have 4 positions,
OFF (no conections)
RUN (batt and aux electrics conected)
HEAT (batt and heaterplugs ONLY conected, spring loaded back to run position)
START (batt heat and starter conected, strong springloaded to back run)

Note when heating or starting the aux electrics are not powered so can't be used to operate a modern diesels electric stop selonoid.

Thats how they worked in the 60's at any rate.  I don't think they changed it so it might just work.

Thanks for your help everyone, I guess my best bet is to remove the barrel from the steering column, I'll take a look tonight.

Cheers.

Thanks Hobbit, that would be very helpful and save me pulling it apart needlessly on Wed night ;)
