Just replaced a CV joint last night. By the time I had finished, it was dark and I was working by torchlight. Got the stub axle, hub, that 5 bolt splined thing ( :lol: ) and the caliper all mounted back on. Then I turned round to see the 'mud shield' sat on the drive... argghh!

It's not the main disc shield, just the ring that fits under the six stub axle bolts. Just how critical is this? I guess it partially fills the gap between the axle and the inside diameter of the disc. It certainly isn't crucial to driving the car, but is it really important to keep mud out?

I could take it all apart again, but I am reluctant to do so. I could always call it weight saving  :D

That helps keep the grit and mud away from the inner bearing...   I'll let you decide how important you think it is :-)

Got it all apart again and put the shield back on. All is well in the CV department. Now the water pumps has started leaking. One thing after another  :(

These things are sent to try us, Steve.

My old Zuki managed an oil leak (so I replaced the rocker cover gasket), followed within a few days by a petrol leak (replaced fuel filler hose) followed by another oil leak (front crank oil seal) followed by another oil leak, all within a month

That's when I decided to get rid of it and buy a Landie

A good tip, if it don't leak check the levels you must be out of oil. :lol:

I think it was more a case of 'well, it my vehicle is going to leak, it may be one that's supposed to leak'.

Anyway, I've got a couple of chassis cross-members that aren't going to rust in a hurry on the Disco  :lol:

Eternal optimists!

Engine oil leaks are Landrover's self changing oil system.
Gearbox and axle leaks keep the chassis from rotting. Sometimes.

Got the pump and took the old one off last night. Broke one of the bolts   :(  Couldn't get the remaining stub out  :cry: So had to resort to gasket sealant to make sure it sealed. Hate using the stuff, that is what the gasket is for. It *really* irritates me when I see joints with goo oozing out everywhere.... and a gasket fitted! Anyway, it appears to have worked. Drove it to work today and no water drips on the floor to join the oil ones that are ever present.

There should be a joke that starts 'How many bolts does it take to hold a V8 water pump on?'
