i love to drive though water but am worried that my engine will conk out(3.5efi) im going to fit a snorkel,have fitted electric fans which can be switched off inside,and was going to use clear chain wax on the electrics
do you think this is going to stop it cutting out? is there anything eles i can do? :?:  :?:  :?:

seal the dizzy cap so water can't get inside if you're going to submerge it.

Yup, silicon the dizzy cap on, silicon the air flow meter top on and fill your boots, and your carpets, and seats :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

My ECU is on top of the dash as well mind, as any water under the seats will make it stop, probably permanently if you leave it there  :shock:  :shock:

And if you are going to do it a lot, raise your axle & gearbox breathers too or they will sieze eventually :evil:  :evil:

A small coke bottle cut off works as a coil cover .
I also made a splash guard from a large robinsons orange bottle as well as siliconing the cap and leads.
Vaseline the leads as well
I had my ecu on the centre console.
If it starts to splutter just let it tick over for a minute when clear of the water and it should clear.
Dont rev it !

As a rule I don't take mine in above the sills, the floors are too full of holes :roll:

I've extended the axle and box breathers, courtesy of the local aquarium shop and have a snorkel.  I use white grease on the HT and good solid conections on the LT.

I have had problems with my LPG ignition processor and it needs moving inside the cab, recently I had a coil pack up after a light dunking, I think it's number was up.

Even trying to keep the thing 'dry' as it were I will cover the entire underbonnet, airbox etc when off-road and don't have any significant trouble.  I'd advise some attention to engine breathers if doing this regularly though.

The biggest problem is the damage the muck does once it's dried on, it's good for quietening the exhaust though :wink:

I love to hear all this bunk about diesels being better in water, with a CR of 23:1 when it all goes wrong the damage is often terminal whereas a V8 with a missfire is just a V7, V6, V5, just let it dry out.

I never had any dramas taking my old V8s through water.
The Tdi is good too and fair point about damage.
I would not go through any proper water splash without a snorkel !
For what they cost its just not worth it.

diesel is by far the best way to go...think about it logically water and electrics just don't mix....i have seen many v8's come to grief trying to do what diesels can do. :D if ever in doubt wait till someone else goes in first  :D

I know they're properly, & time-consumingly waterproofed, but the british Army used to wade 101FC's to part way up the windscreen.
And what engine did they utilise??? :wink:

Done the wading bit and the whole engine is in a neoprine bag with a water tight zip on top, all the dash is in a clear watertight perspex case.
All conections are siliconed and vasolined. this was in 110 defenders with sunroof taken out sitting on roof steering with you feet. fully submerged.
my wife doesn't like it dirty good job i have a landrover.

There is a guy in Trowbridge who water proofs distributors, clean air is sucked from the air cleaner through the distributor to keep the moisture out. Moisture is the biggest problem with the distributor when hot stuff meats cold water. Steve Gunning is his name and for the cash you also get a completely reconditioned dizzy as well.
It works well I have one on my range rover.. silicon the cap down, spray some silicon over the leads, plugs and electrical’s and off you go   07974697632

ive always found just a new set of plugs leads and distributor cap and rotor does the trick, i don tdo deep deep wadeing but for the odd deep puddle, and just give it a good rev after, also i dont have a snorkle.

wd40 / spray grease over all the electrics in the engine bay

scrap the viscous and fit switchable electric fans

ive had water over the bonnet of out 110 v8 and not had a problem

I had all the same probs in the wife’s little V8, it hated the water, tried the sealing the dizzy, spray grease, drilled the dizzy cap ran tube through to circulate air, plastic bottles and the like,
now I just wrap the whole dizzy and the coil in bubble wrap, yes bubble wrap, it's not just for wrapping your eblag items in,
I do leave a small plastic pipe poking through the top of the b wrap so I can squirt wd40 in when needed, works great
If it moves Funk it, if it stops drive over it.

I've just built myself a home made snorkel using nothing more complex than 68mm drainpipe. And that was on my Disco so it went along the wing.... RRC snorkel would be a doddle!

how do you move the ecu ? do u have to buy special extention leads ?

Generally there are no connections to the car other than in the driver's footwell, so lifting it into the dash isn't that hard.

Actually I havn't moved it from under the seat as I'm not interested in bathing my carpets or rotting my sills out, but I have stripped the EFi system out before now and I don't remember any connections other than at the bulkhead.  You will have to prise the relays from their mountings though.

good thing about the v8... you can loose some of the cylenders and still have it running lol

in one of the videos i got it running on a straight 3 (just one bank) lol had to move it aswell as i was stoping an SJ from coming around... had to rev it in neutral then wack it it to drive to stop it stalling... still ran tho...... just cleaned the dizzy with water to get the mud of then let it dry out, jobs a goodon!!!!!!!


i knocked off my silencer when going up a hill on a rock thats why it sounds abit roof (sounded lovley at the time tho)



the one with my mate nearly throwing up, is because the water smelt like row sewage and after it getting on a hot engine it didnt smell to nice!!!!


never even got any water in my air box aswell... the thing with landrovers are that they are well designed already and can cope with alot when standard
