Side Exit Exhaust
« on: February 02, 2006, 11:37:32 »
Does anyone have a side exit exhaust system on their Discovery ? I managed to fold my rear tailpipe back on itself on Sunday so as I need a new one, I thought I'd go for the side exit option and route it up and out of the way.

Anyone got one ? Who makes them ?

Thanks
Mace

I don't know of anywhere that you can get them "off the shelf", most people make their own. An exhaust specialist could custom make one for you, i wouldn't like to hazard a guess at the price though.

Basically, it doesn't hit the ground on steep drops, etc   I've thought about it a few times but never got round to doing it ... yet

Cheers for the replies. Pm's on their way.

I'm not after anything POSH :-)  I removed my LR tow Bar and I've got a tank guard fitted so that takes the brunt of the knocks but the lowest thing now is the exhaust tail pipe. I just want it up out of the way.

I put myself in a nice deep dry hole on sunday, perfectly made for a 90 (but not a Disco). My departure was a tad too slow so I lost front end grip. No probs, just back her up and have another go.....creeeeeek  rear exhaust pipe now facing forward

Time for a few alterations !!!!

Fingers unless you have a really highly tuned v8 i wouldnt go as big as 3 inch for the headers....gas flow may be a little too high.
I have a side exit system with massive chav stailess oval end pipe. Only i silencer and sounds great without being too load.. I will try to get a few piccies as the only ones i have are from with my trailing arm broke and the wheel flattened it a little.
I have removed all the lower rear panel so it sits very high up...as for the towbar protection system- one of our club members removed his towbar on a hard lane causing no end of damage.....

Saw a rangy with a tubular rear bumper and fixed the pipe from the exhaust to it so it vented out at the ends of the pipe

Dave - nice 'n' neat - but is that "legal"?  I would love to do it on my 300 Tdi (get a curved section made up to attach the back section to), but wondered how I would get a flush finish.

The best thing about a side exit exhaust is when you start the motor up. That puff of black smoke with spots of oil in it goes all over whatever your parked next to. I nearly got lynched by my mum for covering her white front door last week.

I do believe it is leagal as the man who does my mot has his the same. "But you never know" the bit that stickes out is just trim and can be pushed in more if needed.
