Title: So what did YOU do today?
Post by: Welshbreed on March 27, 2012, 20:49:55
Personally I had a math key skills exam at college, then disappeared with a few mates to the park where we pretty much stayed all day and played many types of game with a football, then back to the library for some coursework to be completed, then met up with a girl i know from a previous bus trip and said hello *wink wink* and then got some free chips from the chippy as I thought I had some money in my wallet, and turned out I didn't. But I am a regular there and so they let me off. #Winning. and then a quick shower and a bit of music b4 coming to visit my virtual friends. :afro:

..But they all seem to have vacated as well!

So all in all a good day for me.

How was yours? (Reply Below, because I force you too... )

Its a fricken joke! Sat for over 10mins for fuel I hasten to add with the engine turned off as I was down to fumes in the tank, unlike everyone else in the que, so they obviously didn't really need the damm stuff... Bloomin media making a mountain out of a mole hill as usual, its just one big con and the only people that are winning out of it are the Government and the Suppliers...

Well jealous. 'Nuff said really.

As for the fuel shortage, this is why I don't watch the news. It stops me acting like an idiot every time something *insignificant happens in the world.

(*insignificant because I have no control over the it in anyway and nothing I do will likely change it's course, but most importantly because I cannot punch the person responsible in the head for for it.)

boring day today, woke, ate, worked, home, television, here again. Some days are just depressive. Looking forward to some summer vacation so I can work on my trucks a little

lol, yeah don't get me wrong I know thats life, but I wished I enjoyed my job. I'd settle for like my job really. At the moment I say far to often for comfort "Is that a footlong? Would you like extra cheese for 20p?" Ah, the joys of moving and trying to start a new career while renting accommodation. Well fun.

On the plus side I have Monday and Tuesday off for the next 3 weeks, hopefully get some projects done. I have a few at the moment  ...

Famous last words. :lipsrsealed:

today I took a look at my mates Corsa 1.7 diesel, cough - crap - cough, to see as to why his brakes failed the other day. turns out the brake line had corroded away on Front Near Side wheel, and had been leaking brake fluid all over the road. Not much I could do as I dont have the tools to repair the steel and our car was out of commission and he needed a quick fix and so a job for kwik-fit just on the corner. I foresee a trip to a salvage yard as if one has corroded away, likely all others are on way out. so his list for parts continues to grow. I'll be sorting him out an engine service, new OS door mirror, new NS windscreen wiper arm, maybe 2 if I cannot find identical arm, some body work/paint and figure out where it's leaking coolant from.

I will try to get some pics of me doing this as well for your education amusement. :lipsrsealed:

Today (and yesterday, more impressively) I went for a run with my equally unfit flatmate. relax it was in the dark so no one saw us sweating our bits off, and we ran an impressive (for 2 unfit blokes) 3.11 miles before doing 50 sit ups and 20 push ups. and i?we did the same amount yesterday too. and now I am showered and PJ'ed up I am happy as a pig in (well you know the rest)

I haven't added to this post recently as things haven't been that good.

Last Friday was a massive bad day in work that started the day before and resulted me punching myself in on the clocking in machine quite literally - the finger print scanning machine lost that battle. Think I had a nano-metal break down and was prepared to jack everything in. .....anyhow was ordered to have a relaxing weekend.

Sunday, in an attempt to relax we went for a picnic in middle of Salisbury Plains. Took the Disco which is not offroad prepared so took route carefully to get me to Milston Down along side the Nine Mile River (dried) . The mrs drove in which stressed me out no end as she randomly swapped ruts and I could see us getting stuck in a stupid place. Anyway we got there ok and set up and ate some grub and was just starting to unwind and enjoy the sun when one of the dogs suddenly whilst chasing a ball collapsed screaming. No control over his back end. Nothing seems broken - I was looking for gun shot wounds - snake bites the lot but nothing. Dog needed vet badly. So challenge was getting disco off the plains fast as fricken possible to a main road via routes that didn't result in getting stuck with an injured dog onboard. Stress back to volume level 11.
Aimed for Bulford Camp and thankful that the weather had been dry all week.

Hour later arrive in the Vets in Frome with a prearranged emergency vet attending. Lots of nightmare scenarios banding around and one very ill dog admitted into hospital. Mrs in pieces.

Monday - working still in a bit of a cloud with the added thought that I may have to decide to put dog down as he was paralysed. Mrs had been to seen him and he was stoned on morphine, katamine and lidocane with no improvement but with a 90% sure diagnosis of Fibrocartilaginous Embolism - blood colt in the spine - with the 10% doubt being that he was still in pain and shouldn't be.

Tuesday more of the same. Wait another 24hour before decisions need to be made.

Wednesday/ Thursday - Dog stood up    :azn:  Collected him in the evening.

May never get fully healed - next 2 week crucial in how much he will heel. Will need some therapy. But at moment he is bumbling around best he can  with one hind leg not working right. And he wagged his tail when I got him from work tonight which is something I have been waiting to see. Boss also unexpected took me out for a massive fried breakfast today which went down a treat.

Have a good Easter break all - I need this one.

@Saffy, sorry to hear the bad news, but at least he's up and about now *touch wood, and hope it passes smoothly. Nothing worse than loosing a pet..

went for another run today, nearly died of dehydration, due to the eagerness of my flatmate not allowing hydration before leaving. Did an extra hour of work in work, and passed the free food threshold. Nom nom nom. and now debaiting the pub with a couple of friends. And I got 4 days off!!!!!!!!!! woo, I never have 4 days off

now what to do with 4 days off, hmm...

Saffy, I hope the doggy makes a good recovery soon! Having just recently had to bite the bullet and take my old labrador on a one way visit to the vets I feel for you matey! Its a horrible horrible thing to have to do, though fortunately the vets we have are really good and we didnt have to take her in and the did it in the back of the landy. Still I feel crap about a few weeks on.

Back to happier thoughts, just back from a quick trip down to Louth to collect our horse box... Time to spend the week filling it with furniture,  then a return visit next weekend...

Today I have to top coat my summer pickup lid, on account of the wife emptying the vacuum dust all over the last coat half an hour after I put it on. Beyond that internet and food mostly.

Unlucky. Back in the day I finished painting one of my series bonnets black and after the last coat one of the young chickens ran past it (having broken into the yard) and kicked dust all up over it as it was drying in the sun. Later that day the chicken progressed to dinner. It was a cockerel at the end of the day, and we already had an abundance of cock in that area

thanks for kind words - dog has made big improvements and got his normal character back. Time will tell how much he will heal but he is fairly good right now and can leap and sort of run too.

Been a wet weekend but still changed out the gearbox on the series1 on Saturday. Spent Sunday in Wales at parents. Today removed the engine from the Series1 with the aim of trying to fit the diesel replacement next weekend. I least want it mounted if not plumbed.

Work tomorrow with a big back log of orders having built up from 3pm Thursday - joy - busy busy.

Today I noticed that the seam along the side of my center silencer had split and was blowing badly...

Sooo, I took the center section off the car and welded the tube ends to my work bench using 'L' brackets then cut the silencer out and using tube from an old 200tdi exhaust I created a new section joining the two ends then refitted it to the car.. the 3.9 doesn't sound any different so now I'm thinking of doing the same at the back or maybe a side exit straight through..

Today I smoothed out my 90. I lowered the tyre pressures to 27.5 front and 30 rear from 32 and 40 respectively. That has helped no end. I also extracted both anti roll bars, amazingly is still resolutely refuses to fall over when I go round corners and it is way less skittish. Well taken with it.

Ouch!

Yesterday I was out ragging some of the Colleges Motorsport Karts around Sittingbourne Kart track. Was well good, despite the weather.

This was a Subaru Air Cooled twin stroke kart we had on the day, instead of the usual honda one's we use

got some vids as well. might upload some on a different thread in the future. who knows.

Today I have mostly been beating my car straight again after daddy thought it would be a giggle to rip the front of his jimny off by using the front off side of the fender as an immovable object. Senile old div, its not like I have not parked in the same place for the last 4 months. Utter nonce.

I think the plan is twice a year once as a top up before winter salt starts and then again in the spring to get them free of salt as soon as we can. And that will be mostly focused on the jimny and the 90 as they work on the farm, the Benz and the terios seem to have a much easier life.

I was possibly being too optimistic thinking they would go the same day they were listed we are having to wait and see. As to why not to market? Well one its a lot of work and two if they go through in tens you run a risk of the richer buyers taking the cream and therefore reducing the average price, oh and only those people at that sale will see them whereas on the net it is a wider catch of buyers. All that said this is the first time we have tried this so it may fall on its face, we need to see how good our seller is.

Today... I list some stuff I did the other day

Main Headlines;
(Thursday morning) I quit my dull job as a sandwich artist.
(Thursday evening) While looking for work experience in a garage locally, I got offered a work trial at VolksFarmers
(Friday/Saturday) Worked at VolksFarmers and thoroughly enjoyed myself, (despite no mobile signal)
(Saturday evening) Entertained my friends for a mates 30th and was dressed up as Mario & Luigi characters

And I'm totally thrilled with doing something I enjoy, working on cars, and I've never been happier.

Pah! No!
I'll merely be expanding my horizons. Anyone got some spare flat engines about I can "rebuild"/learn?
I think I need to read up on my VeeDubs. Fortunately I can just about tell apart a type 1 from a type 4, and a Type 2 T3 from a Type 3 and I know a bit about the history thanks to college theory. And I always fancied a Rat Rod T1 Van :]

But I dont think it'll ever replace my <3 for land rovers. Speaking of which, I might have gained a free galvanised chassis from another friend today :]

Oh and today I...
Handed in the final assignments for college. and for my 42 required credits, I've handed in 49 credits worth (hurrah) and added some extra credit crap in the form of PSD (Personal Social Development) a.k.a. I can now get a job because I wrote a C.V. and and can use a debit card and cash. Sigh.

Today daddy and I had a free and frank discussion regarding the various merits of pickup trucks with covered backs. Basically my point was why have a pickup just to fix a back on it anr ruin the practicality of it being open why not put a van body on it and be done or leave it open and stop with one or the other rather than a bodge compromise that is a royal pita.

Today I have partial been dealing with irrational idiot consumer who is using distant selling regulations as a crowbar whom get on their hobby horse over a 9 quid purchase where they are at fault but write epic complaint emails which must take them several hours to compile where I just skim over them, count to 10 and make a gritted teeth reply telling them the error of their ways... sit back and wait for next novel to be written on how I am wrong.

(punctuation omitted intentionally)

Why am I given the job of dealing with with returns issues? I'm a orrible git and got plenty of other things to do.  It might be that my bosses think I am good at spotting the people who are trying to rip us off fraudulent -  but to me that comes easy as I just treat every complaining customer as if they are trying to skank me personally

Today I was forced against my better judgment to re engineer my fixed pickup lid with the intent of it becoming more quick release. What a tragedy that was. Before it was 4 nuts and a heavy lift, off in ten min now it its a swear fest and a damaged hand 4 R clips 4 tube nuts and a very heavy lift and takes half an hour of laying on my back in the dark.

Oi old man I'm a qualified engineer you do what your skills lend you to and I'll do mine but don't tell me how to do what you can't.

And breathe.

I need a holiday. On my own. With my tools and my landy.

big english breakfast to start

load up car with dogs and mrs to go for walk in the cotswold water park.

On the way some scumbag walk straight out of a pub across the road in front of the car in front causing it to emergency stop. The car beeped horn and scumbag turned around and came back at the car jeering and offering driver out. Then continued mouthing off at the two slappers outside the pub he originally must of been having a barnie with. Came back across the road to confront the pub slappers right in front of my car....

I saw much surprise on his face from my rear view mirror after he had stopped spinning around and landing on his ass after being clipped by my wing mirror

Did some geocaching in the water park.

Came home and found email from boss along the lines of - 'have anger customer asking why we sent her a large widget when she bought a small blooper'
Something like that usually means I have messed up in a big way. But this time I knew we don't even sell a large widget but we do sell plenty of other stuff inside recycled large widget boxes. Phoned customer up using my own dime.... stupid cow hadn't even opened the  box... there inside is her item.

rain has driven me mad so treated myself to a new watch - ill be eating lean this month.

Wanted a half decent watch under 500 quid that had some soul rather than my g-shocks that I normally wear (and love).
This (well the 600 quid GMT version of it) is going back to Christopher Ward for warranty repairs. Started gain over 2 minutes a day   Time to test the CW legendary customer service. They have supplied a prepaid special Delivery bag so looking good so far.

Diet. Pah. Just get outside and throw/kick a ball around with a couple mates for a few hours a week. Will drop off if your sprinting around, even if your throw up a little bit at first.

I need more friends down here, not been doing much myself, but at 18st I don't look bad either, so just need to do some more activities. might dig my mountain bike out of the shed for the weekend. despite it's annoying squeak (which everyone insists isn't annoying, which is even more annoying, or they say they don't hear it - Are you frickin' serious man?)

Today I've not done much. went to work, prepped a Merc for paint, changed components on some engines for a transplant of a 1.6 diesel into a camper. fixed many faults on an old passat only to find after fixing the gasket on the throttle body, changing the rocker gasket, and a leaking oil pressure sensor, that the inlet manifold also needs a new gasket and excessive air is causing a misfire in cylinder no 4 at idle.

then some grocery shopping. because I've been living on crisps, and bueno's and food at work lol, so now I got chicken roll or ham sandwiches for breakfast/lunch. hurrah. oh and some more crisps

Today I was watching my old (american) football team play against my now local team (South Wales Warriors -vs- East Kent Mavericks) was a good and gritty game with plenty of injuries, aggression, tension and  of course... rain. Oh it hammered it down and the game was decided in the last 3 seconds of time remaining. Nail biting stuff. Me and my flatmate (we are both ex-warrior players, though he is now a maverick coach as well) were running the 'down' chains on the side line... best view and as close to the pitch as you can get without being a referee or player. Was good to see old faces and that and there's even a bit of video somewhere i believe, although I cannot find it right now... typical.

booked day vacation off from work.
Had blood test.
Decided to clear some of the scrap from garden and sheds. So loaded up the Sankey trailer and spent an hour looking for my driving licence to use as photo ID. Finally go to metal scrap merchant in town. Bare in mind I haven't done this before.
Put the defender and trailer on weigh bridge and it came up as 3600kg, dumped the load where the guy said, weighed truck again and it's 370kg lighter, went into office and got £35.00.
Does that sound too low a price? I didn't ask current price of ferrous but looking elsewhere on internet I was expecting more like £50.00- £70.00? thoughts?

Anyway - got all hot and sweaty and garden and shed still look no different I have still got a 110 rolling chassis and tub sitting there - just that it's mostly empty now and theres also gearbox, tranny and engines laying around.

I then wished I just gone to work after blood test because while moving defender around after unhitching trailer I caught front tyre on a scrap engine and tore off the tyre valve. So I quickly wanted to turn truck around and park back on drive way behind gates before tyre went completely flat. I then reversed and knocked down a neighbours 10 inch square fence post - totally sheared it at base! took a couple of fence panels with it too. Joy.   That 35 quid isn't going to go very far!

Today the car got to earn its keep. Been dragging the big trailer about swapping seeps accommodation got the turbo going good and proper. That said it was towing like jelly, first thought was tyre pressures but further investigation lead to the tow ball being about an inch too low, so swapped that for my ball and pin and fingers crossed we should be good. Just need to make it all detachable for playing now not that a few bolts is an issue in reality.

Today I have fitted a new semi springer antenna for the radio as with the old one unless I was under a transmission mast all I got for radio4 was static. I also cleared all the crap and tools out of the dash and behind the seats into a suitable lock box which is locked in the boot so hopefully no more random squeaky rattles from lose kit trying to drown out the rest of the noise of the car falling to bits.

Hi Andy. Hope you are well.

It's a 3.5 at +0.020" with 9.35:1 pistons, Peter Burgess heads, 3.9 cam, roller chain, tubular manifolds and Janspeed exhaust. I was considering re-sleeving it to 3.9, but I had to keep the costs in check a little!

It's a bit of a pain I had modded my TD5 bulkhead for the LT77.... it now needs to go back the way it was to suit the LT85

Converted a foot locker into a cubby box that fits under the Defenders driver seat so that I could house a HUGE leisure battery there.
Plumbed it back to the passenger cubby where the main battery is housed.
The 10mm cable on the positive goes through a regular battery cut-out switch so that I can manually 'switch' in the leisure battery to start the car if needed or to give some extra cranking current (makes a big difference!).
The leisure battery side of the cut-out switch is plumbed to the AUX fuse panel which supplies the HAM/CB radio, Car PC, Eberspacher night heater, work lamps and in car power sockets.
Across the cut-out switch terminal posts is where the X-ENG split charge relay is wired in parallel. So with the cut-out switch in the off position the split charge handles the charging of the leisure battery once the engine is running and keeps it isolated when ignition is off.

oh and I drilled holes in my plated crossmember to accept the NATO hitch now that I have ditched the full tow hitch. Have ordered the Wolf external plate and the internal backplate.

Two concerns that I have is that the back plate might not fit as that is where the crossmember is a bit buckled from a shunt it had (the outside was over plated with 6mm plate nd spacers to make the crossmember look straight again.

Also worried that the sankey trailer is going to ride too high now rather than nose down. Might have to put taller tyres on the trailer.

Today I have to go buy some ryanair specific luggage for a trip to Dublin, as far as I can see it would have been cheaper to fly BA business class via New York by the time all the cheap flight extras and on costs are added in. 50quid for a bag in the hold, 60quid if you can't print your boarding pass, which can only be done 4 hours before the flight if you check in online, food if you can get any is extra, then there are enough taxes to fund a small dictatorship oh and if you want to park your car in the same solar system that will be eleventynintytwelve trillion tones of gold. Spent the weekend being a pedestrian tourist in Dublin. Did the Guinness and jameson tours and was underwhelmed. Toured the kill something or other gaol tour was impressed. Walked for miles and miles and ate cake. Generally very good for a city. Next time though I will go by boat so I don't have to just look at the mountains in the distance, I can go climb them.

Oh and I get a fixed land rover back tomorrow. Yay.

It was yesterday but the only excitement this week was picking up a sankey for a very reasonable fee. It seem's lately that even a complete rust bucket will sell for 150 + quid.

Simply and i don't like to brag it cost me 50 quid and it also has the bowser tank too should i want to carry 100 gallons of whatever about. It's not that old. a little bit of research on the Mil reg number suggest 1982 year.

Sweet price, that's a lot of trailer for 50 notes especially when you compare it to the prices of the junk outside Halifords. Probably made by Sankey too unlike most of the MKIII. What's the bowser made off then? easy to fit?

The Tank is all plastic and has a gate valve on the back this is then connected using a short pipe to the T bar you see on the back. There should be taps on it. Apparently later sankeys have the hole cut out in the back to allow the pipe through.

The only internet piccy i can find is  This one  (http://eshop.lmslichfieldltd.com/WebRoot/BT2/Shops/BT4011/4B74/54DC/4AFE/95C8/9C9E/0A0A/33E8/C5D3/P1010237.JPG) The tank sits in a steel frame this then bolted using the lashing eyes to the floor. Rumor has it that the tank will also fit in the back of a landy too.

Tank looks nice and compact with a low profile. Can confirm the tap hole on the mkiii as mine has got one (maybe two) in the bottom of the tailgate with a rotating cover plate.

took dogs the out in the Series 1 up onto the ridgeway. Bit wet - bit windy - lots of fun.   No door tops on the truck, 1 single speed wiper and no heater.

Strange how its (fun) when you don't  have to do it ! but when there is a need to do it ie: for work it becomes a chore.must admit since turning pension age I do enjoy to be cossetted by a near silent cab  squeekes and rattles drive me mad also a multi speed heater system and wipers a must have  oh the joys of youth when I didn't care a hoot about anything other than the fact it had the ability to start and stop.

Today new font stand on the sankey as when i got it that was bent, Very bent.
I then beat the front eye back into moving so the brakes now work. just needed lots of wd and a little persuasion from a dead blow mallet. ;)

Oh and picked up the latest arrival my own 80inch CCV trialer. Having run it for the year on a widows behalf i was offered first refusal, I didn't!

Today I mostly decided that when I grow up I want to be a steampunk.

steampunkers ewww they are worse than hipsters.

In work  we stick the 'steampunk' label on certain stylistic industrial pc equipment when listing for sale on ebay and it therefore sells without fail for ££ more then it would have otherwise.
