HOW CAN YOU CHECK, OR KNOW IF THIS IS COMMING LOOSE OR IF IT HAS BEEN REPAIRED? :? IT HAS HAPPENED TO A FRIEND OF MINE AND THE COST IS GOING TO BE IN EXCESS OF 4000 POUNDS!

Sadly, LR have no details on VIN ranges or anything :(

The only check you can do is drop the sump and take a look.  While it's off best to remove and redo the bolt IMHO.  Rather than pay LR, I'd get an independent to do it.  Same result, just less to pay.
Wish I'd done it now . . . . . .  :(

John,

Yes it is the oil pump bolt.  Some (and LR can't say how many) did not have sufficient, or any, threadlok applied when they were fitted.  End result is that they work loose and the sprocket that drives the oil pump comes off etc.
If you are at all worried about it then I would have to say (as I'm now going through the hassle of getting it sorted), with hindsight, that it would have been worth the couple hours labour to get it checked.

it happened to me the engine has a fail safe though.! it cuts out and did not let me re start for 15 mins on restart it did not sound correct so a quick turn off and off with the sump to see a bolt hanging out of the pump put back in and hay presto one saved engine, and its done 15000 miles since then, how lucky was that...?

a guy came into work with a motor like that & got it fixed,cost him a new turbo etc BUT just last week the oil pump chain snaped & its picked up a shell & the engine is all squeky & wont turn over,its a 2 hour job i think to drop the sump on a td5 & ur better of getting an independant to do it at £40+vat an hour instead of landrovers £90

I know mine's a later car, but maybe I'd better drop the sump and have a look before it gets expensive ... :(

Hi Guys

Make sure you use the correct type Loctite on the bolt. You will need a Loctite  that is resistant to oil contamination. You will also need to replace a couple of gaskets, the sump gasket and a smaller gasket which I can't remember the name of at the mo, sorry.

I'm just about to do this job........ so i will let you know how I get on  :wink:

No problem. That's a very good idea and I would like to help in anyway i can.  :D

Just bare with me cause I'm no natural mechanic and thus I work very slow  :oops:

I will take loads of pics and take notes where necessary.  :wink:

Oh BTW Tim, you probably know I use the D44 site as well, how do I upload images on to this and D44 site from my hard drive?

I don't have a website with pics on yet cause I'm waiting to find a suitable course or suitable book to teach me the basics of web design. This is something that I have been meaning to do for ages.
